Just can't love the Springfield XD!

Not that I hate it, don't get me wrong. My problems with it lie in two areas. First, that darned grip safety. I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think it was designed for normal people (you know, people like me). I CANNOT reliably engage it without an awkward hand position. I try, but I still find myself half-engaging it and fumbling with it at the range. ARRRRgh. Yes, they do sell the cheesy tape-on pad, but I don't think it's a good thing to have things taped onto the safety of a defense gun!

Now, to my second beef. The XD has a FOUR STAGE TRIGGER! Now, on this planet, most pistols I've tried do not have a mushy four stage trigger. If you count the funky dance my palm has to go through to depress the grip safety, that's really a five stage trigger! In fact, even the Ruger P94 I own has a ONE STAGE double action pull. Sheez. And it's positive, not mushy.

Now, don't get me wrong, EVERYTHING ELSE about the XD is perfectly fine with me. I love EVERY OTHER FEATURE. I'm sticking with the Glock 22. Anybody want to buy a Used XD40 and a Used HS2000 9mm?

You got a lemon. The trigger on mine is better than any Glock I've ever handled and is on par with any auto I've ever handled, except for the 1911. Take away the long reset, and it's actually approaching some of the stock 1911 triggers I've felt. Send it back.

If you have a defence gun that you are having second thoughts about if it will work when needed. It's your life that going to be on the line when it's really needed. I would start looking for a replacment

The XD is the only polymer pistol that surpassed my expectations.

I still prefer a nice 1911 varient...but having spent a few hundred rounds playing with an XD I can see where it just might have a place in my collection some day. Still don't own one.....yet.

My XD-40's Trigger beats that of Glocks hands down and, the grip safety isn't even noticable to me.

Badger I am right there with you on the safety thing. I might be referring to the wrong part but I believe it is called a "beavertail" safety. I too feel extremely awkward when handling these types of pistols. For whatever reason I feel like I am having to "think" about my grip or otherwise "try" to depress this type of safety. It is not a comfortable, relaxed, position of my hand to get the job done. I guess that is my main drawback with most 1911 style guns.

Well I like my XD-9 SC. I have no problem with the grip safety and like others have said the trigger is awesome. Everybody that I let shoot it seem to like it also.

Me too, but not for the same reasons.
The gun just sets too high in my hand, I don't like the way the plastic feels, and don't care for the finish. On the other hand everyone I have picked up has had a very nice trigger, not four stage by any means.

If I found one dirt cheap I might pick it up, but it would have to be dirt cheap.

I own a G23 and I have no plans on buying an XD any time soon. But, based on some very informal playing, I would strongly consider the standard XD over the G23 if I didn't have a 40 and was looking for one.

Overall, I do prefer the ergonomics of the XD to the Glock and stock for stock, I prefer the XD trigger, but both have been 100% reliable and I can hit targets at 7 yards equally well. Never noticed an issue with the grip safety though I've always prefered the standard profile 1911 grip safety to the 'speed bump' variety anyway.

send it back to SA, there's something wrong with your trigger. My XD trigger is very good. Better than that glock 34 i had.

Took my newly purchased Springfield XD40 to the range Monday and fired 100 rounds. The first 50 were in a 6-inch group, very disappointing. The second 50 rounds closed the group to 2-inches with most in the 10 ring. Very comfortable to shoot. Trigger very smooth. Sharper recoil than my .45 but expected with the muzzle velosity over 200 fps faster. Bought a DeSantis Speed Scabard holster and now am ready to carry this baby concealed during the winter months. My Kahr P9 in now my summer carry. Hubby is very impressed also.

Well, everyone has to decide what fits them best. While the overall design of a Glock is rather nice, for me the ergonomics are not terribly good. The typical Glock grip feels like I'm holding onto a 2x4. I've tried the Steyr M40, which shot beautifully, and pointed very naturally. BUT, the design of the grip and frame were such that the top of the backstrap smacked the base of the thumb right on the joint with every shot. After ten shots, it was not much fun anymore.

Different story with the XD series. I like them enough that I bought three! Accurate, reliable, and comfortable. For me, at least, what's not to like?

Maybe I'm more sensative, but feel the trigger as you pull it. There are four distinct steps as each individual safety is deactivated. Not so with the Glock. Well, if it is the same, I haven't noticed.

Just got my XD-9 SC.

Put 300 rounds through it a couple of nights ago. Not a wobble, although my thumb does have a tendency to ride the slide lock enough that the slide would not lock back on the last round.

I was very impressed with the trigger. I usually don't like striker fired pistols because of the trigger. It's not up to quality 1911 trigger. It's a little long and the reset is a touch long, but the weight was good.

I really like the gun. Especially considering its size. price and capacity.

Huh? The only safety you are deactivating with the trigger is the firing pin block, which is moved out of the way during the initial takeup. I am very trigger sensitive. I felt that the factory trigger was a little (make that a lot) stagey on the break, but a few minutes with some Flitz and a polish pad fixed that. Since then I have had no problems with my XD9 through 16,000-plus trouble free rounds. The sear travel is still longer than some of my other guns, but it's so buttery smooth that I barely notice any more.

If your trigger is that "notchy" sounds like it needs a trip back to SA, or at least to a good 'smith for a trigger job.

What kind of grip do you use? I have found it hard not to press the grip safety when I pick up my XD. My trigger feels realy smooth too although it does have a little overtravel.

I was originally turned off by the trigger and grip safety, but the grip felt better than any of the other guns I was considering at the time. When I’m shooting I don’t even know that the grip safety is there and the trigger safety is just barely noticeable.

I was very, very happy with mine, but after a little rust and a lot of premature slide lock, besides a trip back to SA that didn’t solve anything, I’m now just pleased with my XD-40.

I don't care much for the XD. Hate grip safeties. It is top heavy. Don't like the trigger. It is goofy looking. I will stick with my Glocks. To rack the slide you have to engage the grip safety - don't like that at all - I think it is dangerous myself.
