Xd 1911

I hear all the good things about the XD and I know the good things about the 1911 from experience...now I need to ask a simple question...

What is the difference between carrying a 1911 with the hammer cocked and unlocked...using only the grip safety...and carrying the XD with only a grip safety...

I know the XD has a trigger type safety but I see this as useless since if you do not have your finger on the trigger it neither will shoot...

they are similar but there is a signifigant weight and pressure differnce needed to fire an xd then it does a 1911. you can do wahtever you want but if i carry my sa 1911 it will be cocked and locked. just becasue you draw the pistol dosen't mean that you are gonna need to shoot, the thumb safety is an extra margin of safety for the 1911, while the longer trigger pull of teh xd is the extra margin of safety for the xd line.

I think you mean cocked and unlocked, as in the safetly off. Eh?

The XD's trigger moves further and is heavier than a 1911 I'm pretty sure. And the trigger saftey does make a difference.

Yeah, and it's funny how the exact same reasoning is used to show how GLOCK/XD are just as safe as da revolvers (and if you disagree you get the painful colloquialisms about "B.H.'s and bang switches"). But then when you start making the same analogy from GLOCK/XD to cocked and UNlocked sa or tda, those trigger safeties are all of a sudden VERY important!

So good question, but I don't have an answer for you. Because for some reason trigger weight and travel distance are the big difference from C&(u)L'd carry to GLOCK/XD, but if for the same reason you are less comfortable with GLOCK/XD than you are with a revolver, you don't DESERVE to even have a gun (until you get mroe B.H. & bang switch training)! I have a g34 for instance, but I would not carry it (I'm not professional enough). I prefer tda, some aren't comfortable with one in the chamber even then, and on the opposite extreme you have a few carrying tda with the hammer back or 1911's in condition 0! Those guys have BALLZAK!

Don't forget that the 1911 is a single action pistol as well. Triggers are around 4# and can be much lighter. I would not carry around my 1911 cocked and unlocked personally, although I have been know to do just that if I accidentally bump the ambi safety off.

So while still safe, I prefer to have the external, manual safety. In addition, this is why I like the XD's with the manual safety as well.

I agree, I decock immediately. But I've seen a couple of them argue it to no end on GT, so at least some CLAIM to carry in that condition anyways.

This is proving to be quite an interesting discussion...let me say that I never stated that I carried my 1911 cocked and UNlocked...and I never have...but I carry a Glock...no external safety...I really think the trigger safety thing in hookey...and I have carried a DA revolver...while I know and agree that the wheel gun does have a long trigger pull and that the trigger pull on the Glock is heavier...I do not see the difference between the XD and the 1911...I might add that I have never live fired an XD...but I have dry fired one on several times...I think we all agree that the finger off the trigger is the only true safety...and if we keep that in mind that the rest is a mote point

The only thing I can see the trigger safety doing is reducing the potential for an object to press the trigger by accident. One could imagine something pressing back a light single action trigger even if it contacted only briefly or at an odd angle, whereas this could not happen with a trigger like the XD or Glock unless the trigger were more positively pressed.

Admittedly an unlikely event, but I believe part of the idea behind such safeties. So with the XD (unlike the Glock) you also have the grip safety to reduce the odds of something depressing the trigger successfully other than a firm grip and intentional trigger pull. Really only a slight difference between that in an XD and a 1911 cocked and unlocked. More importantly to me is that you gain a manual safety over a Glock, or for that matter traditional SA/DA guns that feature decockers. I see the XD as having an advantage over those guns, but not a 1911 in terms of safety arrangement.

I don't own a 1911 (yet), but if I draw a pistol with the intent that I may need to fire it, the safety is getting snicked off as soon as it clears the holster. I would NOT carry it with the hammer cocked and the safety off.
