I was thinking about these 2 questions so I thought I would ask them here and see what happens .
1st question - Why do you carry a concealed firearm ? Did something happen to you or a family member ? Do you live in a high crime area ? Do you just like to be prepared ? Or is there another reason ?
2nd question - Just a guesstimate - How many people do you think are " packin " - 1 in 500 , 1 in 1000 , 1 in 5000 , what do you think ?

I've run into some lowlifes in my life and a couple of times when I was out hiking alone ran into some suspicios characters . One time , at a rest stop I had to relieve myself in the woods and some creep came out of the woods and started walking towards me . Luckily I was finished with my buisness and got to my car and took off .
But the thing that finally made me get my ccw permit happened a few years ago . I live in a quiet suburban nieghborhood . But , one summer night there was a home invasion very close to my house . A person at the home was shot , but not seriously injured and the owner of the home was pistol wipped . The crime was committed by a group of 5 scumbags from a nieghboring town that has a much higher crime rate and a few " gangs " . I was thinking , what if they walked by my house and noticed my windows open , it was a hot night . What if I was out walking , like I sometimes do on nice nights , and I ran into those scumbags ?

I guess that in my area , probably 1 in 3000 carry , maybe less . A lot of sheeple around here .

I carry cause I can,,,I don't live in a high crime area...I'm ready if I need to be..;)

State of Florida has Info about how many CCW are issued per county...we are in a very small minority, thats for sure...

I carry where I legally can. I always carry at home and around the farm. The area I live in is quite isolated and immediate 911 response just isn't a reality. My concern is that some crack smoking meth maker and his buddies may decide to set up shop on my farm. Sort of -knock knock, "who is there" BANG... stuff my carcass in the freezer and set up shop for a week. They would be on video, of course, but some one has to find it, play it....and it won't really do ME any good.

My wife was approached by "hunters" this season, out by one of the barns, as she was doing the chores. I assume they were not polite in some way or the other. She bought herself a Smith 908. She ain't going to be a victim either.

In our "neighborhood", most pickups are equipped with a rifle, a shotgun, or both. I don't think the neighbors carry, but......

I have not heard of any cases of burglary in our area in the past few years. However, a murder victim was dumped off within 4 miles of our farm, and another female victim was dumped off and left for dead just down the road a mile or so. It CAN happened here.

My CCW is just another thing I carry every day...like my Leatherman, my lighter, my pen and notebook. I don't even notice it much anymore. It will be there IF (hopefully never) I need it. NailGun.

I don't carry off my property because I am not old enough, but I will. Why? Because the world is just too dangerous these days. I just like to be prepared, and my father and my grandfather were almost caught up in the race riots of the late 60's

That reminds me, my mother's father took a shotgun to the local high school and got his daughters out of there during the rioting- nobody tried to stop him...

I have never been robbed, mugged, or the victim of a violent crime nor has anyone in my immediate family. I am generally the biggest person in any given room at 6'3 290lbs (ideally I should be 260ish and bulletproof :) ) I have on 2 occasions prior to obtaining my CCW been the target of an intimidation display (I did not feel intimidated, but that was the intent of the other). One was a road rage incident the other was downtown with some friends. My decision was made based on the desire for a force multiplier in case I found myself in a sticky situation despite my best efforts to avoid it.

For the road rager; if anyone here can tell me how a 28 year old 95hp diesel car can piss someone off, please do. At the time I was legally carrying a CZ-52 in my car without a license and was damn glad I had it. The guy in the van behind me tailgated me for 8 miles with his brights refusing to pass at the several opportunities I gave him, was making all sorts of motions other than the one-finger salute such as making a fist pounding action and motioning for me to get out of the car - which wasn't very likely. 911 was less than helpful on that issue.

The other, I was out with some friends and a couple of guys were getting their blood up and because I was standing there one of them started mouthing off to me. I have found laughing at people when they do that only adds to their inferiority complex however I had a fair degree pucker factor going on. A fight eventually broke out and Mr. Mouth got taken to the floor by one of the other guys while I stayed out of it.

I would guess in Douglas County Colorado, at least 1:300 civilians legally have the option to carry. When I filed for my CCW, the guy told me he gets about 250 to 300 applications per year. Figuring we have about 250,000 population and they've been issuing CCWs for a few years... Could be higher considering we don't need a CCW just to keep a pistol in the car.

1st question - because I can :neener:

2nd question - the last time NC published numbers (2004) it was 1 in 135 that had a permit. CCW classes are always full, and the Sheriffs office says they get a lot of applications every week. How many of those with permits that actually carry, I don't have any idea.

Planned For The New Year

The reason I DIDN'T carry for so many years was ignorance and denial. I think they call that "stupid" in some places.

What has led me to become armed and, further, to begin to carry, was a process of deliberate self-education.

A number of things built up over a period of about a year.

The highlights of the data I had to absorb include the L.A. (Rodney King) riots, North Hollywood shootout, a "spontaneous" march of angry Mexican "youths" right past my front door, and a foiled carjacking 30 miles from my house.

The light went on when I discovered that it is a matter of SETTLED LAW that "law enforcement" is not obliged to keep me, personally, or my family, safe from harm.

It would be SO COOL if wisdom were handed out when we're young. It sucks to be over 50 when the "important things to know about life" board begins to light up.

I coulda had 20 or 30 years of practice and experience!

I learn fast, though.

Thanks to people like yer selves.

My gratitude.

Bless y'all.

Carry

I carry for the same reason I wear a seat belt. For unexpected emergencies. In NH you don't have to wear to seat belt unless you are under the age of 18 years.

In our little town of 4500 people there are about 500 permits out.

I moved into a low crime area because I didn't want to be a victim of crime.

I don't go to high crime areas because I don't want to be a victim of crime.

I carry a gun because I refuse to be a victim of crime!

I think that says it all.

Nothing bad has happened to me and mine. But, like those stock market dudes say sometimes, "past results are no promise of future performance!"

I honestly don't know about the second question. Well, I think my best answer is "not enough!" ;)

There are two reasons I carry...

1) Because I think all Americans should exercise their rights to defend themselves
2) Several years ago, I was doing source inspection for a contracting agency. I was traveling to areas I didn't consider particularly safe, so I started carrying a gun...first just in my vehicle, then on my person. It was at least two years later I got a permit.

Couple of things. I spent a great deal of my life engaged in a family jewlery business in a small central Texas town. I carried most all of the time. I met the police many times on alarm calls with my Hi Power, and no one ever gave it a second glance. However, time moved on, and my employment changed. I didn't carry for about 15 years. Two incidents caused me to seriously re-consider my position. Those were 9-11, and Katrina.

I firmly believe that the only chance the populace has against the government, should it go twisting off (it ain't far from it now), is an armed populace. Add to that the fact that we here in north central Texas are just one big wind away from being in the same situation that the folks in New Orleans were after Katrina, and I got well armed, well trained, and stay well practiced. I carry almost every day. I have never had to draw my weapon, and God willing, I never will.

I don't have the figures regarding how many folks carry here, but if I had my way it would be almost everyone.

If we fall into anarchy for whatever reason, I am ready. So should everyone be.

I'm buying a few handguns now because my 4 legged body guard just passed on. :( I promised him I would find another way to protect myself.

BigBlock,

When you get time, go to http://www.petloss.com/ and read the Rainbow Bridge story. And get yourself a handgun and a shotgun - more of each type as you see fit, but a few handguns may not be as useful as a handgun and a shotgun.

I got my CHL because it bypasses the background check, which there never used to be until Brady, then the so-called "instant check" which isn't. The CHL was a "good guy card" for firearm purchases, at first.

I did not really intend to carry regularly, but realized one day, out with my wife, that if something really bad came up - I would die trying to protect her while feeling like a fool for not having my pistol by my side, now that I legally could. Since then, I've carried.

I do not think many people I know carry, but maybe they are just discrete about it.

Regards,
Andrew

I carry because I can too! Also, I live in a small town and have to do a lot of driving to get some serious shopping done. I always have a fully charged cell phone and gun with me. At night on nearly deserted roads alone--a good idea huh? I'm not sure how many carry around here---we do have a lot of hunters though.

Question #1) yes, I have been a victim of several crimes and attempted crimes. A guy in an area I was in one night randomly shot 2 or 3 passing motorists from his car. I had driven that very road that night during his homicidal crime spree.

Question #2) Learning from my Dad's experience. He has been in more than a few situations where he had to draw and fire his handgun to defend himself or the law as an MP in WWII. He chased off a dude that was trying to break into my bedroom one night when I was a little kid.

It made a lasting impression on me to see my Dad standing in my room, cocked Colt.45 Govt in hand in the semi-darkness as my Mom hustled me out of the room at 2AM as my Dad prepared to confront the would-be intruder.

My father always said "Never go on defense - Stay on offense!" And he truly lived out what he said.

Yes, that's just a few reasons that I am armed.

No I have never been a vicim of serious crime and I want to keep it that way. I carry for some of the same reasons as other:

1. Defensive purposes - It my responsibility to defend myself, NOT law enforcements or the government. And others have said, tragedy doesn't give a warning call. The best way to avoid it is to be prepared.

2. Because I can - Those that don't excercise their rights regularly stand a greater chance of loosingt them

3. To avoid state waiting periods on handguns - In the state of Florida their is a 3-day waiting period on handguns for those without a CWP.

4. Because it pisses off, and at the same time scares, Brady treehuggers - This is a tough of my mean and sadistic side. Anything that drives moonbats crazy is a good... no a Great... thing.

1. A right unexcercised is a right denied.

2. Yes, one spooky event a few years back involving a car full of strange guys stalking me on a freeway trip. Nothing came of it thank God, but it sure woke me up. Shortly after my arrival in the San Jose bay area I realized the corallary of CCW -- you're least likely to be able to (legally) carry in the areas where you're most likely to need to.

Make of that what you will.

I carry because I was a boy-scout...

"Be Prepared" - to me, that means owning fire extinguishers and detectors, and packing heat (among other things...

then there's the other thing they teach you... "reverence"... for god and nature and others...

the reverence to god means reading the bible, attending church, etc...

one of the majior tenets of religion is that God (and Goddess!) help those who help themselves...

I carry the gun, in hops they will help me never to need it, and if I SHOULD need it, that they'll help my aim to be true, and my use to be justified...

as for howmany carry? likely more than you think...
