I've developed a bit of an interest and was just curious as to if anyone else did this.

I have a S&W Mod 64 that's marked Pittsburgh PD. When I first got it I really liked that marking as it kinda added some history to the gun. I knew not only that it was a former police gun, but what department actually had used it.

Now, I've yet to actually acquire another PD marked gun yet (though I've got my eye closely on a few), but I've seen several others show up online.

Specifically, I've seen online:

S&W 3rd gen .40's marked Memphis PD
S&W 3rd gen .40's marked Atlanta PD
S&W Sigmas marked Niagra Falls PD
and there seem to be a number of surplus Glock 22's marked Detroit PD.

Anyone else have an interest is these type of marked duty guns?

Like I said, I'm just curious :)

If the gun suits a need and can be had at a fair price, I am neither bothered nor encouraged by such markings.

Of course, it can be an enthalling hobby, however don't limit yourself to just the marked pieces, there are plenty of neat, historically/geographically interesting unmarked PD trades out there just waiting for you to snap them up...For instance, this South Australian S&W K-frame.....

Oh yeah, I've got several other police surplus guns too - just not sure of their history. I know for example that my Walther P-1 and SIG P6 likely did duty as West German police sidearms before I got them, but no clue what department.

I'm quirky when it comes to collecting stuff though. Heck whenever I visit a new city I always go out and find a shot glass with the city's name on it and bring it back to add to a collection of shot glasses marking my travels. When I see variations on an object I start to want to get all of them :).

I know what you mean a gun that was bought to be used and has been faithful is way more cooler than any 50 year old safe queen

I have a S & W model 59 with Fresno police markings, good gun, a tad worn but it goes bang every time.

I have a bunch of department marked handguns, mostly revolvers. I just buy guns to shoot so if the price is right the stampings don't bother me. Some are sort of cool.

Your P-1 was likely military. The P-6 should have a state (lander) marking like NdS for Neider Saxon (Lower Saxony). PM me or reply here and I'll try to help you.

OP: People collect all sorts of marked guns: police, military, railway, ship lines, freight companies, you name it. I am in the school of it does not add or detract. I also conceed Wells Fargo, RCMP and a few others do command a premium in the market.

I wanted to start a similar collection. I just never had the free funds. To me it makes the history more tangible.

I saw one in a shop not long ago. It was a S&W CS9 engraved with "To Chief ____ in memory of his 25 years" engraved on the frame. If my wife hadn't been there to stop me it would have been on my credit card. I just thought it was the absolute coolest thing. It was a little sad though. How could something so personal and precious end up in the used bin? I so wanted to give it a good loving home.

(Can't remember the chief's name right now.)

Something once used by gestapo, ss, sd, kripo personnel would be interesting to have. Not sure about pistols but they say ole' swords once dipped in blood are worth more today.

I once found a pistol with a similar engraving and thought the same thing. Found out it was the pistol that the recipient used to kill himself.

Yeah, I like police guns.

They tend to be surplus, and very very cheap. Carried a lot, and barely shot at all. If they are stainless, they shine right up.

The markings are unfortunate, but what can you do?

Picked up one for myself and one for my son recently. Marked Atlanta Corrections. A little wear on the outside, almost flawless internally. Both shoot like a dream, both less than 300.00 each.

wow hadnt seen anything like that before. those are sweet and ill start keeping my eye out for one for myself. i like having guns with a bit of history. all i had seen previously was numbers etched into the frontstrap? (metal inbetween the grips behind triggerguard) they pop up at my lgs fairly often ive always wondered what those #s are. my 65-3 has them i got a deal on it because of that and it certainly hasnt hurt the gun any.

I have to assume you are not talking about case #'s scratched into the left side of the frame just below the cylinder, deep and very easily read; Y followed by 7 digits. Go figure. S&W M&P 4th change, 38Sp, 6", and really a nice gun; except for the etching.

I have a 5926 thats marked with Chandler AZ PD. Kinda cool, but I would rather have one without the markings.

I like them.....but.

I can't afford to collect them.:( Here's my police marked M65, marked below the cylinder on the frame.

My glock 27. I was told it was bought by the homicide detective that it was issued to

Police markings are a real turn off for me.
I will not buy a handgun with police markings unless it is extremely discounted.
