First time, amatuer kitchen table gunsmith. I can do some things :p

Anyhow, I bought Jack Weigand's extractor adjusting arbor and guage set to get my 1911 Ed Brown Hardcor Extractor set to 25-28 pds as he suggested, got it to 26 after a two tries.

Idiot who installed it for me originally, who "claimed" to be a gunsmith (and who ruined my nice older Model 60 by widening by filing a cylinder stop notch to correct a slow-time issue...) didn't even tension the damn thing.

Extracts and feeds alot better now that it is PROPERLY done.
If anyone doesn't have his tool, it makes the job cake. Brownells has it and Jack sells the set direct for less on his website jackweigand.com
:)

Extractor tension belly belly important. And most of them are not set correctly out of factory or made from a type of steel that will not hold tension. Radiusing all of the corners and polishing helps also. Smooth is good.

I'm kind of wondering if the Ed Brown will hold up, don't know if it's spring steel or tool steel.
Thankfully the corners were radiused already.

Forgot who produces a spring steel extractor...

All the big boys are running Aftec extractors in there race guns. Its a slightly different design from what I understand and they are far and away the best.

I have never had a problem with EdBrown components. Its not about round count in my mind so much as heat cycles. Run the gun hard and hot a few times and let us know how it holds up.

Do you happen to know if this spring loaded extractor requires notching the barrel for clearance, or is it a, more or less, drop-in part? I can't find any reference to a machining requirement in the webpage... and the hook looks to be 1911 pattern, so I'm guessing not.

The reason I question the drop-in aspect is because D&L Sports (Dave Lauck) makes what he calls a "Tanto" extractor... the hook having a tanto blade shape. It does require a .250" mill cut in the barrel for clearance.

Cheers,
C

Aftec extractors drop in. Best part is no tuning. Ever! If they start having problems, you just have to replace the two little springs and it's like new.
