Just for fun.

I'm also in the "context" group; what comes to mind depends on who said "gun" and the sentence it was used in. It might even be a verb, like "He will gun him down."

But as a noun, I don't think of Howitzers first. I definitely think of rifles and handguns.

Probably a revolver of the old west persuasion or a tommy gun in the hands of a swarthy 1940s gangster.

Guns are those scary evil things that want nothing more than to kill everyone including all the children. When I see a gun I scream and run for my life! haha

It depends on what I've been thinking about or researching recently. For me, at the moment, it would be an ar-15 variant... specifically, .458 SOCOM. Tomorrow or next week it might be a .30-06 bolt rifle or 9mm Luger pistol or an AK.

Honestly, nothing really jumped in my head. Instead all that popped in my mind was more like a question: "What kind of gun?" Like I was looking for more information on what gun you were referring to. I will say, though, that I was assuming that the gun was man portable and not crew served :) If you had asked "What's the first gun you think of?", I may have had a different answer.

As soon as I read it my thought was John Wayne, sitting astride his horse, Colt on his hip and his lever rifle braced against his leg.

Then as I scrolled down...there was HSO, post #27 and on an island, post #29.
They beat me to it!

When you said gun I "saw" a handgun. No make or model or type, just one held in your hand.

If the news said "a man with a gun..." it usually means a handgun.
"A man with a rifle" or "shotgun" would mean that.

Just my take.
