I just got a CVA Optima and my son got a TC Omega for christmas and we are going shotting tomorrow. We have american pioneer powder in the compressed pelletes and we wanted to know after you put them down the barrel do you crush them up? Or leave them hole? Also how often should I run a patch down the barrel? Thanks

Do not crush them. If you followed American Pioneers instructions on barrel prep (squeaky clean and no lube), they make it sound like you should never have to swab the barrel between shots. Lots of info at their website:
Americanpioneerpowder.com

You did not say what type of bullets that you where going to use . If you are using powerbelts you should be able to shoot several in a row without swabbing between shots , if you are using Shockwaves in the Omega you should swab the barrel between shoots , also the Omega is a sabot shooting rife , with the Shochwaves you should be able to get 1" groups at 100 yards ( I do with mine ) . Just have fun finding what shoots best out of both guns .

I've heard reports that the APP pellets don't always fully combust and may discharge burning chunks of ember material. If that happens to you it may affect velocity and accuracy. APP may be one of those powders that shoots better in its loose form. Also, the loose APP ffg has larger granules than other ffg powders, so it might be even better to try out the loose APP fffg if you can find it available.
Let us know how the pellets shoot and if the reports are exaggerated or not.

Yes I got powerbelts for both of them....I heard they were better and cleaner than the sabots.

Just to double check I don't want to mess anything up, I just set the bullet on the powder but not hard enough to break up the pellet? Thanks and Merry Christmas

I was just reading DEER AND DEER HUNTING and I read an articale about muzzleloading and it said if you use the american pioner powder you need to chop it up with your ram rod. So can anybody tell me how to use these for sure.

Bodo,
I would personally follow the advice in the article for the reasons that I previously stated, the pellets don't always fully combust which makes for variable velocity and less than optimal accuracy.
I don't recall any posts here recently about the APP pellets, you might want to try the search box at the top of the page, and that may not be helpful either.
But to say the least, it shouldn't hurt to crush the pellets up as long as it's done in a consisent way without too many large lumps or by pulverizing it into too fine of a powder (although neither way should hurt anything).
You can always try them as pellets once you're at the range and also have some pre-crushed and/or pre-measure in pill containers to load too. Then you can judge for yourself and let us all know which way worked the best.
Bodo, thanks for the info. contained in the article about the APP pellets.
Good luck & welcome to muzzle loading where things aren't always absolute and there's lots of trial and error. That the fun about makin' lots of smoke! :D

On the TC site it says that u could run a patch through the barrel after every shot. Thats what i do and i think it is more consistant.

Bodo : What works for me , and I have taken about 15 deer this way with APP pellets (1) 50gr. and (1) 30 gr. pellets and the Power Belt 50 cal. 295 gr. HP Copper-Clad .and I don't crush them, and I use a #11 Remington cap.
