I have about over a dozen 500-round bulk packs of .22LR, and I can't seem to go through them fast enough out of my Henry Lever Action 22 so I took this little one home two days ago:

This one included the manual, original case (serial # on case matches), two backstraps (small and large), three front sights of different heights, two magazines, a small pouch with a factory test-fired case, barrel nut wrench, and other small tools. Also included was a key for the internal gun lock, which I swiftly threw in the garbage where it belongs. The hard case, with it's molded foam, is nice enough I think I will actually use it!

From what I gather, this P22 has all the factory revisions: Manufacture code AK, factory test casing pouch shows a date of April '09, and the serial number begins with L (a good thing as well, I believe). The magazines are marked with a "-B" suffix, which are even better than the "-A" revision (they carry all the design improvements from the "-A" but are made with thicker steel).

So far so good. Should work flawlessly. It is also about the same exact size as my Kahr CW9, though the bore of the P22 seems to sit higher above the hand than that of the CW9.

Between yesterday and today, I fired over 1500 rounds through it with no problems. One Federal Wally-World pack (550 rounds, plated HP), one Winchester Xpert plain lead HP (500 rounds), and a Winchester 555-round (copper plated HP). Gun was dirty afterwards but I experienced no failures of any kind, though I was expecting them since people bash the P22 all day long. I'm already impressed, and even more so that it cycles just fine with El Cheapo bulk pack .22LR.

My only complaint? The little pistol ejects spent casings in ALL directions! The wifey gets very turned off by this and I would hate to have this wonderful, fun little gun leave a bad impression on her. This is also a major annoyance for me as I have no other firearm that projects hot pieces of brass so incosistently. The P22 launches them in my face, down my shirt, or bounces them off my head. I would like to correct this problem ASAP so let me know what you guys recommend. I found this aftermarket extractor, anybody have experience with it?: https://www.volquartsen.com/products/542-walther-p22-exact-edge-extractor

Other than erratic ejection, actual function has been 100% and I have no complaints thus far. Looking forward to comments/questions/suggestions.

I apologize for the low pic resolution. Here is the P22 compared to my Kahr CW9, a 1911, and an FAL:

they are great additions to any collection... one drawback.. you will shoot it more than all your other guns...LOL...

but seriously.. they are great little guns... was my first pistol purchase... well... gun purchase period.... several rifles, shotguns and pistols later, it still gets shot more than all the others... Not the most accurate gun I own but I cannot go to the range without shooting it... mine loves stingers.. so I will shoot some thunderbolts, then some mini mags, and finally stingers... like 3 different guns... LOVE IT...

speaking of the brass flying everywhere, on my last trip to the range during some rapid fire I had a piece of brass fly straight up and land between my the top of my right hand and the gun, burned me pretty well lol

You will continue to love it. Men will be jealous of you, women will flock to you...:what: Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but you will have a lot of fun with it. I love mine.

Last trip to the range with mine, it ejected a casing that bounced off the wall, and went straight down the back of my shirt! Hot .22LR down the back, with a loaded handgun, eek!
Great pistol, you'll love it. Just be careful on the ammo. (Winchester X).

what i would do, to help fix that problem, is hold your pistol off slightly to the right of your body. so it looks like you are stiff arming your right arm and almost limp wristing your left arm. what this does is make it shoot the shells further off to the left. you can compensate for some accuracy loss by just adjusting your shooting acquisition a little bit. that's what i kinda do with my CZ. but, if it does still fly them into your face, I would see if you can get a gunsmith or the factory to do something about it.
or maybe you should just get some better ammo.

Just bought two more mags (expensive!!) and pumped another 550-rd Federal W-M value pack through it today. Gun is working great, I now have 2k rounds through it in 3 days with no problems (with two cleanings). I went ahead and ordered the Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor to see how it improves ejection direction.

The little pistol ejects spent casings in ALL directions!
Mine steadied out after a few thousand rounds, it still throws brass in a fan-pattern, but not so much straight back.
Please report back on that extractor, I have them for my Rugers, and have been contemplating one for the P22.

Please report back on that extractor, I have them for my Rugers.....

bigfatdave, how well does it work in the Ruger? I have a 10/22 that I purchased brand-new and has been nothing but problems (mostly stovepipes and FTE). It seems all my other firearms function flawlessly but the Ruger.

Ah yes, I remember my first P-22. We parted ways after it tried to blind me, three times. The silly thing kept ejecting the shells high up off the wall, causing them to bounce down between my eye protection and my face, landing less than an inch away from my eyes. :fire: Each time it did this, it gave me a new experience in pain. After the third time, I gave it the treatment :cuss:, and sent it to live with someone else.

My new P-22 hasn't yet tried to blind me. ;)

Rubber_Duck, mine are in a pair of Ruger mkIII (well, mark 2 and 1/3 or so now) pistols. They are great, but removing the LCI helped a lot as well. For the price, why not try them out?

Ah ok, I misunderstood you thinking you were referring to the 10/22 and not the MkIII pistol. I should've known since this IS the handgun forum.:p

I received the Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor today and installed it and fired 200 rounds. Ejection is now more consistent to the right and back, but all is not perfect, as 5 or 6 out of the 200 rounds fired still sent casings back at my face. This is still a dramatic improvement over the factory extractor, however. And FYI, my factory extractor is the revised extractor with the "hook" shape (versus the old that was square). So the VQ extractor is worth it even if you have the "new" Walther extractor.

Note that I had absolutely no problems or failures with the OEM Walther extractor, I was simply trying to make ejection of spent casings less hazardous to the shooter. Function has always been 100%.

Here's a pic for ya'll to enjoy:

Sorry if i sound noob but along time ago, wasn't there reliability problems with the P22 i was wanting to get one but was deterred by those rumors.. maybe someone can tell me there experience with them because its the best looking .22 I've seen and the grip feels pretty nice.

They did have problems, Hacker. A few developed slide cracks and many had problems cycling standard velocity ammo. They did shoot fine with high velocity ammo, though. I believe that the newer models have been exempt from those problems. My sister had one as her first gun. Then she got an M&P 40 compact, so the little 22 came to stay with me for a while. It is growing on me pretty fast. She may not get it back :)
