So I went to the gun store because on the phone they told me they had 1 Saiga 7.62x39 16" bbl for $595, thought the price was a little steep, but i went to check it out anyway.

the people at my local gun store have a real crappy attitudes. but i don't really have a choice

i get to the gun store and check it out, I loved it, really lightweight, and the trigger pull isn't bad at all, not as bad as people make it out to be.

I mentioned that I thought their price was a little steep, all the guys behind the counter started laughing at me, one guy claimed that "a few months ago it would have costed 3X that amount." I guess that made sense because of the ban scare.

after checking out some other guns, I put down $50 on the Saiga, because the guy behind the counter said they sell fast. (he sold 2 yesterday apparently.)

I get home and look at the receipt and almost crapped my pants... I forgot all about tax, that's what happens after you shop online so much

If I want that Saiga I'm gonna have to pay $647.35 out the door (NY tax rate is 8.62%)

I have 29 days to think about it.

I want to hear what you guys think, too much, or go with it?

Thanks.

*edit*

I live in New York so don't tell me that i can get a standard configuration rifle, i'm not allowed to buy one.

Man, that seems high for a Saiga. I can't imagine those rifles flying off the shelves like he said at that price when you can get a standard configured AK for $100-$200 more.

But, all AK prices seem to be crazy lately and the Saiga's still seem hard to find right now so, if you really want it, that may be what you have to pay. I guess they get a premium in NY too.

If I could get a standard config. rifle i wouldn't even be looking into a Saiga, I'd put down $3,000 for a SCAR-17s and that would be the only rifle i'd need. Although I did actually like the Saiga a lot, nice little package

Oh yeah, living in NY SUCKS! as soon as the opportunity comes i'm packing my bags and getting out of here, weather my family's here or not. and it makes sense that i have to pay a NY premium. thanks for your input.

Yeah I already checked buds but i wasn't gonna have them order one if they already had one. There's another gun store near me, and they thought that the saiga rifles were banned by name on the SAFE act, but I think they were thinking about the shotgun, which is actually banned by name, and I couldn't get them to order one. i have bad luck when it comes to gun stores.

that is high it seems but i dont live where yu do.couple weeks ago at a gunshow i could of purchased all the ar type rifles i could carry for 650.basic guns with poly lowers.even a smith for a 695 with a metal lower i think.romanian aks for 550 or less.tons of mags and ammo also.

i wish i didn't live in an anti-gun state and go to gunshows. i will be able to one day

The Saiga in standard, sporting configuration is a great rifle. I shot my 5.45 that way for over a year.
Converting it to standard AK configuration is easy and fun...and you end up with a Russian made Kalashnikov.

I paid $530 out the door the other day from a trusted shop. But I am in NH so no tax no bans, probably could have waited a month or two and got one for $475 but I wanted it now. Going to start my conversion next week, when all my parts get here! Good luck with the gun they are pretty rugged.

if i ever move out of state ill convert mine, too. i'm glad that my moneys gonna go a long way since these rifles pretty much last forever.

I paid that for a Century converted Saiga last December. You can get a real AK from J&G sales right now for $599 so I don't see the point of spending that kind of money on an unconverted Saiga. Combine that price with the fact that the dudes at your local gunshop sound like real winners and I think I'd find a nice quiet FFL to do a transfer for me from J&G, Buds, Centerfire, or Atlantic arms.

That's a bit high IMO for a Saiga. Not stupid high but higher than necessary at least for where I live.
I despise gun stores where the clerks are jerks. Sorry you have to deal with it but give it a few more months when they have AKs and ARs lined up behind the counter and then you can be a jerk. Buy it online and take the receipt to them. There are several shops around here and only one is like that. I shop there every couple of weeks or so and make it a point to never buy anything even if it is cheap and I always point out loud enough for other customers to hear that I can buy certain ammo for a certain price online. Then I go to the other stores and buy my stuff. Want to be a jerk? I can be one too.
AKs at my LGS are still $800, or were a couple of weeks ago, with very few takers. ARs are a dime a dozen everywhere around here as sales just completely stopped.

That was a few months ago, this is now.

yeah my LGS sucks (although they have one hell of an inventory). funny thing is, every time I call, the ONE nice, helpful guy that works there picks up, and then when i walk into the store, well, i don't want to use harsh language but the guy that isn't very nice and helpful helps me.

There's a few other gun stores around, i'll check them out.

If I do end up buying my Saiga from them, it will be the last purchase I make from these guys.

Its high but if you want it just go with it.
To me it's not even about having the gun, if the store is pricing the gun too high, why should I buy it? I don't want to support the gun store if they're dicks.

A few show up here and there. By no means are they in steady supply. These are probably ones already in country.

WOW. I paid $329 for mine in 2009... and was pissed because the couple of shows before that they were on special for $289.

Sorry to hear what the panic and the state of New York are doing to discourage your participation in the gun hobby.

I can tell you that I am very happy with my SAIGA. Converted it right away and it's been a great rifle. Loves the Golden Tiger.

A coworker of mine bought a regular converted Saiga 7.62x39 last year for $600, which I thought was overpriced given it had been spray painted some stupid camo pattern.

He then turned around and sold it in January for $2k plus the buyer threw in a shotgun worth $600.

I don't see any reason prices won't go back down below $400 for unconverted Saigas but might take a while.

Can't wait for the Saiga 9mm to get imported!

thanks for all your replies, guys. good to hear some people get better prices then what i have to deal with, and for some reason continue to tolerate (not for much longer, anyway)

whatever. :(
