I just drove 3200 miles from Berkeley, CA to Hanover, NH. I'm glad to finally be out of california for good. I've heard the nearest IPSC to Hanover is all the way up in morrisville VT. Oh well, can't have everything :)

Any other THR folks in the upper valley area?

I need more money so I can buy all the guns that I can now legally own... AR-15 here I come!

Hope you grow to love NH as much as I do.
Currently in the Sunshine state, but my parents have a house on Lake Winnipesaukee (just got back from there last week).
If I could find work, and the wife would come (she won't--born and raised at the beach), I would be there.:)

Welcome to New Hampshire, atek3!

Well, as long as you didn't have any hippies from Berkeley follow ya'! :neener:

Berkeley to Hanover does make for an odd move. Are you in New Hampshire because you're going to Dartmouth College, or working at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center by chance?

Curiousity...............gets me every time. :D

I live in Concord, but I work up in your new neck of the woods.

And fish2xs had it right, get your winter clothing first. Going from Berkeley to here, it's going to feel twice as cold for you as it does for us your first winter!

Welcome!

My home town was Windsor, Vt and at one time my wife worked at Dartmouth. Twenty years we mover farther north about an hour and a half from you. You'll like the area..good country, good people and good laws!..Essex

NH is gonna be a busy place... my wife and I are moving to Rochester next week.

The only IPSC is up north? Bummer. Maybe I'll try to get one started on the south end.

How 'bout IDPA or 3 gun?

Welcome to FREEDOM!!!!!

What's wrong with Class III?:D Ammo costs will still be higher than gun cost about the same as shooting sporting clys, 5 stand etc

For your AR think Bushmaster, the barrels are made in NH and the rest in Maine keep it local.

Being on the border (NH-VT) you'll have a very large playground, and not alot of folks you HAVE to share it with (I love Cal., just too many californians there:)) . I lived in Vt. for 20+ years, great people and very gun friendly.

Enjoy.

hey help us out

i'd like to move, too. but i've never moved out of my county, much less out of state. can you tell us how the process for moving worked out for you, and any advice you might have on the moving process?

things i'd like to learn mroe about:

* housing
* jobs
* moving stuff
* taxes and other legal stuff
* phone numbers?
* family, relatives?

Welcome atek3!

I don't know about IPSC, but Pioneer Sportsmen's club in Dunbarton, NH does have an IDPA program and usually hosts monthly matches and the annual New England Regional IDPA match.

See: http://www.pioneersportsmen.org/index.htm

Dunbarton is probably about an hour, hour and a quarter or so drive from Hanover.

Welcome, have fun, enjoy the freedom, and stay safe!

Hey silverlance, are things really that bad out there in Cali? It would be nice to find work out in L.A. but I just could not live out there. No way no how.

atek3 please tell us about your gun pursuits in N.H.. I plan on visiting at least Manchester to scout around and get a feel for the place. Seriously considering moving up there.

How are the housing prices? Condos, etc.? Isn't Sig Sauer America based in New Hampshire?

i got a couple of Aunts in the Manchester area. it's very nice up there, but as stated before it gets too cold for a Florida boy like me. one of my Uncles is a state rep up there epsom area i believe. hes always telling me that it would be a solid red state, if the commies from NY and Assachuesets stoped coming there (kinda like FL:cuss: )

as long as you can stand the cold i think u'll like the area and people very much

p.s.
another thing is they have no sales tax, or state income tax. however im told the propety taxes are an arm and a leg

Congrats on your move. Take a deep breath and enjoy your newfound liberties. You are only one, but there will be many more like you, the Republik will notice the loss eventually, and they will try to stop the rest of them. I'm suprised California hasen't adoped the star/hammer/cicle into the state flag yet (Comrade Arnie is used to that I guess). God I hate communist..."better dead than red".:cool:

well

in cali the benefits are that you have a wide variety of cultures and venues. this is especially nice if you happen to be asian or hispanic. the wages are also typically higher than in many other states, sometimes very significantly. further, the market for consumers is highly competitive and therefore many things such as electronics, entertainment (clubs and bars... i can't drink so it doesnt really apply to me), and food are deeply discounted in your favor. finally, the weather is never truly cold all year round, and the most you ever have to expect to spend on heating or cooling will be necessary only for a month or two. If you happen to live in some of the nicer areas of california, things are even better as you will have breezy weather all year round (san diego, for instance)

downsides:

DAMN POLITICIANS WHO WANT TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS BY TRASHING GUNS.

too many friggin' people smushed all together

too many people smushed together, frustrated, and having no room to go vent it... therefore start being social cut-ups

SMOG

traffic

no winter

life moves real fast here

taxes taxes taxes.

Congrats, but stop your whinning!

Good grief. You small state guys act like it is so bad to drive "all the way" to the north end of the state. What is that? 30 miles?

I don't get the east coast often, but a few years back I did on business. I was driving along and if i recall correctly went through 3 states in less time than it takes to get home from work each day!

Just the same, congratulations of moving to the United States.

lots a questions, lemme see if I can tackle some of them.
MissileCop
Yes, going to graduate school.

I packed all my possessions into a car, and drove 3200 miles. Now I'm living in a dorm. my guns/ammo are being stored by the campus armory, until i get my own place.

Fly320s

from what I gather IPSC is about 1.25 hr north of hanover in VT. theres lots of IPSC/IDPA in southern NH. Unforunately, the nearest good 3gun is all the way down in Harvard, Mass and upstate new york... I'll deal though.

"For your AR think Bushmaster, the barrels are made in NH and the rest in Maine keep it local."

Too provincial, I'll probably buy mostly JP, CMMG, and LMT componentry.

silverlance

Never moved out of your county? how old are you? Moving isn't that hard. Depends on what field you are in. If oil exploration is your thing, NH probably won't work. If you're a techie, you can live in Southern NH and commute to Boston, MA (which partially defeats the purpose of moving to NH, but oh well). Basically, find a job here, then rent an efficiency until you find permanent housing.

edave

thanks for the heads up.

JesseJames

from the perpective of a gun nut that loves freedom, CA is really that bad.
My plans as a gun nut are to learn to hunt deer, shoot as much IPSC and 3gun as I can afford, maybe take up highpower again or start tactical. Oh and get a CCW...

Vic

the flag already has a bear on it (bear was the animal of the USSR right?)

STAGE 2

I call BS on this one. California started to have crazy gun control laws as far back as when Reagan was gov. Things picked up in the 80's, gun nuts didn't start leaving until the mid 90's. By 1999 the Democrat majority in the legislature was so solid, gun nuts or not, the assault weapon ban was going to pass, and it did...
California is just a far-left state, so it has gun control laws, a few thousand gun nuts fleeing to greenier, more gun-friendly pastures hasn't made a bit of a difference.

Steve Pearson

I'm not a small stater, but 1.5 hrs is still a long distance for me. In Berkeley I had high power, IPSC, 3gun, bullseye, PPC, all within about a 15 to 30 min drive. That totally spoils you.
