Just picked up a Ruger 10/22

Finally! This is the .22 I have been lusting after, and luck dropped one in my lap. Was chatting with my ex over facebook when she mentioned that her fiance was wanting to sell his. I asked her how much, fully expecting it to be around $350-400...but nope.

I told her I'd meet her today with the money to pick it up, lol.

Now it's home and about to be detail-stripped for cleaning. I think he got rid of it, unhappy with it's 1.75" groups at 50 yards, which is fine by me, because hopefully when I'm done with it, the only original part is going to be the receiver. He also threw in an inexpensive scope he'd bought for it, so I have something to hold me over until I decide on a better one.

I guess I should clarify...prices in my area are ridiculous IF YOU CAN FIND ONE. I saw a NIB pink 10/22 selling for $280 at a LGS, and it's the only one I've seen in about 6 months. I'm happy with what I paid for it.

Also "used" in this case means it's had about 300 rounds put through it, that's all.

$250 is good. That is how much they sold for retail brand new. right now they are almost impossible to find for that price or less, so I'd be happy to buy one at that price.

Last time I saw a 10/22 was at Walmart about a month ago for $227, and those are "unicorns" so to speak. I would've bought it but I already own one, bought mine for $180 on Black Friday last year

Depends on where you live. In some areas, you can't find one for under $300.

Took a look at the stock. Impressive! What are you thinking about for a barrel? I have a Adams and Bennett barrel and shoots mid priced ammo well. I'll have to post a picture.

Mmm, well, the 150 I gave for my stainless doesn't sound that bad anymore. Nice guns for plinkin' or woods bummin' (that's what I wanted mine for), but they can be made to be whatever you want, so long as you have the pocketbook for it. I think that's what you must have been looking for and, in the scheme of things, what's 250 if you get what ya want? When I gave 150 for MINE used probably 10 years ago now, I kinda thought it was too much, but hey, I WANTED IT and they wanted a buck fifty. In my defense, the new stainless model was a bit more expensive at the time and the gun didn't have a mark on it.

Actually, I was more worried about obtaining a 10/22 than thinking about what I'd do once I'd gotten it, besides the stock (which I'd planned on getting for my Savage Mk.II before I decided to sell it).

So, with that in mind, if you've any advice, or want to show me some items, I'm all for it. Otherwise, this moment starts my adventure into researching what all I can do to the gun to make it into a tack-driver, one part at a time.

Let me make this clear though...from what little I've read already...a lot of the DIY stuff is out, unless it's very, very basic. I don't have a lot of the equipment needed, and I'm basically going to be doing this:

1. Wait for paycheck.

2. Order part online.

3. If it can be assembled with a screwdriver or hammer, or polished with sandpaper and scotchbrite pad, I will do it myself.

4. If it's more complex...take to gunsmith and pay him to do it/ install it.

5. Rinse and repeat until gun is to my liking.

Midway USA has blue A&B barrels on sale for$90. All you need is an Allen wrench. The stock channel needs to be wide enough to except the barrel.took me 10 minutes to upgrade mind.

Yup! I can't wait!!!

Saw the same thing happen after the '09 scare. The biggest caveat is that there isn't another nutcase in the news.

I was kind of leary about spending the extra bucks for a barrel and stock upgrade for my
1982 $129.00 K-Mart Blue Light Special Ruger 10-22.

Bought a Butler Creek heavy target barrel, stock "kit" for $125.00 when the new local Dick's Sporting goods store opened in our area in 1999, and was glad I did.

Huge difference in accuracy,really wakes up the 10-22 and mine still runs the stock trigger group, with me shooting I can't see a trigger upgrade helping much.

I recently sold a MKII Savage 22 cal FV Accutrigger, that shot with ,but could not out shoot the Ruger, same scope and me at the trigger, and paid more than twice the price of the original Ruger.

You couldn't ask for a better rifle to start a trick build. You'll have a blast and wind up with a nice accurate rig to boot !
