I went into the pawnshop today to check on a previous purchase, and finally wore down my resistance to the 25% off .30-30's I'd been eyeballing. Mrs. Tradja expected me to come back to the car with my repaired shotgun, but instead I was carrying a new "cowboy rifle" and a huge smile. She took it in stride. She's great.

$190 OTD for a late 1970's production Model 94 in very good shape. I feel great about bringing home my first non-semiauto centerfire rifle (Mrs. Tradja has a bolt action .30-06). I'm OK that it is not a coveted "pre '64" - I've been wanting a lever action rifle for some time, and this was marginally cheaper than a lever action .22! Handloading for her .30-06 has shown me the versatility of .30-cal rifle cartridges, and I look forward to this.

Like most of my pawnshop rescues, this one has some ill-conceived doodad bolted to it. :scrutiny: It has a plate-style scope mount on it. When I removed the mount, the big screw did not fit flush in the receiver - the screw must be proprietary to the mount.

Brownells and Midway both sell Model 94 screw kits for ~$40, but does anyone know what this one is called? (not my rifle in pic, but same receiver)

The complete screw kits list the following, but I just don't want to spend $40+S&H for a screw.

Carrier Screw (2)
Link Pin Stop Screw
Carrier Spring Screw
Magazine Plug Screw
Cartridge Guide Screw (2)
Mainspring Screw
Finger Lever Link Screw
Mainspring Strain Screw
Finger Lever Pin Stop Screw
Rear Band Screw
Front band Screw
Sear/Safety Catch Spring Screw
Plug Screw
Spring Cover Screw
Hammer Screw
Tang Screw

Obviously, many of these are easy to eliminate. Is this a plug screw?

You might try carefully grinding the thread end to allow the screw to settle flush.

I'll bet if you try e-gunparts.com you can buy just that single screw without haveing to buy the whole kit.

Thanks very much for the replies!

Awesome. Now that I know this, I've got a few inquiries out to small parts vendors. After you identified the part, I was finally able to google a pretty good parts diagram. For such a popular and prolific rifle, I was very surprised that it was so hard to find a parts diagram:

Yes, I had thought of this, maybe putting the screw in a drill and spinning it against sandpaper, then cold bluing the exposed spot. It looks like the flared "mushroom head" of the scope mount screw is blocking it more than the overall length.

Thanks, I will try this next.

ETA: Thanks Lovesbeer99, that site is great. I had not known about it before. They have the screw available individually, and in stock.

I have to ask the obvious question, have you tried Winchester for the part?

Apprarently they never heard the rumour that they "went out of busniess", because they still sell guns, parts, have a web site, answer the phone etc,..

The part you need is No 15 on your parts list. The finger lever pin stop screw.

It is always worth asking the obvious! :D Yes, I tried them, but for "obsolete" models they just refer you to a variety of small parts dealers and specialty gunsmiths.

e-gunparts.com seems to have it in stock, and cheap. I want to review the gun more carefully when I have some time for any other missing parts (this seems to plague my pawnshop finds ), and figure out if I want to include sling hardware before I place my order.

Last I talked to them on the phone, they said they had a 10 year spare parts supply, but they must have sold out all the spares. They have several places listed on their webiste for obsolete parts. I see spares at guns hows pretty regularly, so just pick them up as I need them.

Good luck with your gun. If it doesnt shoot as well as you'd like, go to leverguns forum and look up the articles regarding improving accuracy. I've had a few that shot amazing groups, (under 1"@100 yards with reciever peeps), and some that didnt. There are a few simple tricks that often help them shoot better. Trying a few different brands and weights of bullets, like with any other gun, can help too. Most of them will shoot very well with loads they like.

BTW, the side mount scope mounts arent too bad, a little odd feeling at first, but they work well, and you have your iron sight available at the same time. Does yours happen to have a peep sight built into it? if so, I'm interested.

You probably want a pair of receiver sight plug screws, unless you are going to use a receiver sight, which I would strongly recomend. The Williams Foolproof is a good, simple sight that help you shoot up to the guns abilty.

You can buy the screw from Brownells for around $5 dollars + shipping. I had to buy two of them for a couple of 94s I bought that had the side mounted scopes on them.

Hmm, all I could find at Brownells was the $40 complete screw set. You wouldn't happen to have a link to the individual 94 screws? The e-gunparts.com site seems like a pretty good source.

Malamute, thanks for the heads-up on the receiver sight plug screws - sure enough, it's missing one of those two as well. I'll probably pick up a Williams Foolproof peep also. Alas, the scope mount is a pretty plain plate - no built-in peep. Honestly, I don't even see how you could mount a scope to it anyway. It might be missing another component. Thanks also for the leverguns forum reference - I had not heard of that. It looks cool.

I'm going to start with some 110gr soft points I have, maybe over 14 grains of Red Dot, and move up from there until I get some tight groups.
