Hello all,

Thought it would be polite to introduce myself before jumping in. Beware, I come here seeking knowledge. I'm based in the UK where it is hard and socially difficult to discuss firearms. A friendly passing science fiction author pointed me here so I'd stop hassling him with inane questions. My partner and I have decided for a variety of reasons to own a firearm. Due to laws and cost reasons this is probably going to be a pump action shotgun, preferably two. I'm going to be bugging people for opinions as to gauge, manufacturer and what to feed it with for most effective use in a house with brick interior walls, er, I mean for sport shooting. Then theres maintenance and advice from ladies on how the better half can avoid bruising her softer bits when using it or any other gender specific advice that you can think of. We're thinking about kids so that big safety issue will probably come up as well. I apologise in advance for any obvious questions but I haven't been on a firing range for 12 years and these things are a lot of money over here so I will want to have as much info as possible before I throw money around.
I look forward to talking with you all.

Regards
Billl

Hi Bill. There are at least two other UK members here-agricola and St Johns-who post frequently. Welcome :)

Glad to have you here, Bill! Pull up a chair next to the stove and have a beverage.

I met a couple of Brits in Alaska this summer. We met on a halibut fishing boat. Had a great time conversing with them. I had the chance to run into them again at the airport in Anchorage. They told me that while in Alaska, someone felt sorry for them and offered to take them out target pacticing with all manner of firearms........rifles, handguns and shotguns. They were thrilled.

Welcome, Bill!

Pump gun? I thought an English gentleman was supposed to use a well balanced double (and wear a plaid tweed hunting outfit while using it)? :)

Welcome Billblank,

That wouldn't be our own Madmike now would it. :D Perhaps not but it would be my guess.

Check out the shotgun forum and do some reading in the archives, and be sure to look under Dave McCrackens "101" series of learning. Good luck.

Bill - welcome to THR :)

Kent eh? Well as of five years ago I still lived down in Devon ... severely depleted regarding my previous sizeable firearms collection! I am now fortunate to be a proud American .. and have redressed the balance.

However - I like your thinking ... a lot! Good for you. There is a fount of knowledge here and with regard to shotties ... a good few folks who can very usefully opine. Shotties are down my list compared with handguns and rifles so - I'll leave it to the guru's to answer your questions over time.

Hope you enjoy - and stick around too even when you have solved the immediate shottie decision-making process!

Thanks folks,

T'was indeed Mike that is to blame for my prescence. He has unknowingly inflicted upon you a deep well of filth and perversion. I'm starting to trawl my way through all the achived stuff to avoid being too annoying. As for tweed, make aspersions like that and I'll start calling you swedish :neener: . I save such outfits for lady Chatterly re-enactments.

I'll certainly be doing my best to participate and be sociable. I'm already tempted by the various debates around how to behave when an intruder enters your home. I'm instinctively leaning towards the defend rather than attack philosophy.
It's just nice to be around people that don't think I'm about to "go postal" purely because I want to own a firearm.

Cheers
Bill
