Just loaded up my first batch of .38 rounds last night and shot them this morning. This is my first attempt at reloading and it was a lot of fun! The roungs, 125gr FMJ's over 5.6gr Win 231 powder, were wonderfully pleasent and accurate in my snubbie.

Couple of questions, can anyone recommend a good powder "thrower" so I don't have to weigh each charge in a scale?

Do I need to lube the brass when using a carbide die?

Any advise on crimping? I've been applying very light pressure when doing this to avoid hurting the brass.

Also, how many reloads can I get out of my brass?

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Josh,
You should be able to find most of those answers by running searches for each topic. --They are good questions.

Some folks do not lube when using a carbide die, but I'd say if you use a spray, Hornady One Shot, you will have an easier time of reloading.

A thrower will definitely speed up your process. Someone else will have to suggest which one is better than another.

As light of a crimp as will suffice is what I have heard.

Just keep checking your brass; they will tell you when they want to retire. Look up info on what makes brass unsafe. You can make a tool out of a stiff wire to check the inside of cases.

Read as much as you can digest concerning reloading.
And DEFINITELY get one or two current reloading manuals.

Your topic statement caught me. Yes, it is fun!

I reloaded rounds yesterday, and they are all gone this evening. There is something quite fulfilling in creating your own loads and sending them on their way.

Welcome to the addiction.

you need enough crimp so the rest of the bullets in the cylinder don't jump forward under recoil when the gun is fired.Flaring the brass works the brass more than crimping does,imho..
shoot the cases until they split lengthwise,in a .38.Very hard to get into a dangerous situation as compared to rifle pressure cartridges.
.38's are very easy to size,no lube needed, save the time for loading more ammo.
RCBS makes a very good thrower, just make sure the one you buy comes with the small 'pistol' drum/chamber.Plenty of used ones on the internet.

You've picked a great powder,no need to change that at all for your needs.

Since you are shooting 38 spl there should be a grove in the bullet that you will roll the crimp into. Light is ok just make sure you get it to roll into the grove a bit.
When using a powder measure make sure you throw at least 5-10 charges when you are checking them for weight to get the powder to settle. If you don't they will vary in weight till it does settle.
Enjoy you're new hobby but don't think you will save any money as you will be shooting way more now. :D This is a good thing.
Have fun and be safe.
