I was looking for a modern rifle ( I'm a traditional black powder guy ) for short range hunting of deer, black bear and elk. Where I live 150 yards is a long shot and 75 yards or less is the norm.
After looking around a bit ,I traded for a CZ 557 carbine in .30-06.
I really like the fit and finish of my carbine. No gaps or fillers in the wood. The matte blue is pleasing to my eye. The sights align quickly and a thick factory recoil pad rounds things out.
After sighting the carbine in, I went for a hike where I hunt. Toting the carbine along old logging roads or in the brushy woodline was very comfortable.
The sights were easy to see in sunlit areas or the dark of the woods.
Felt recoil was not bad, thanks to the recoil pad, load ( Remington 165 grain core-lokts ) and the fact that the carbine fits me well.
I was able to keep 3 of 4 shots touching , near the center, within a 3 inch circle offhand at 50 yards.
Overall I'm very happy with my new rifle.

Thanks for the kind words and welcome, Sappyg.
Looking forward to sharing more and learning more.

Uh oh, you just made a classic newbie mistake and went and bought a high quality, handy rifle chambered in a fantastically competent all around cartridge.... How are you going to convince yourself you need other rifles with that one sitting in the safe? [emoji6]

Congrats on that pretty rifle, it looks like a keeper for sure!

Thanks.
Thats funny Gtscotty...I guess I could get the CZ some friends to keep from being too lonely in the safe, LOL.

Funny how CZ does that all the time.

I just recommended a CZ-527 .223 to a friend as a most likely best rifle he could buy.

He's happy too so far.

Great looking (and shooting) rifle!!

I think you did just fine with choice of the CZ 557 carbine. Great rifle in a great caliber. I also like your Favorite Rifle over in the Blackpowder forum.

Thank you Bannockburn. I felt the need to step into the 21st century. My only other centerfire rifle is a 1882 dated 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield rifle. Glad you like my Hawken, she has and will continue to serve me well.

Dr.Rob,
Thanks. I think I got lucky on the wood, some nice subtle figure there. As for the shooting, well I hope to as good every time.

I just bought the 527 in 762X39 and I'm really impressed with CZ. So much so I bought one of their pistols (97BD) the following week.

Congrats on your carbine!

Thanks Redstate ... A friend has a CZ-75 it is a excellent pistol.

Jenrick, Thank you. I like to practice how I hunt and there is no benches in the field.
There are some more old knives of mine in the show your knife thread.

DP03, Thanks. I couldn't decide which 527 I liked better ,those carbines sure look like fun.

Nice choice, Andy. I, too, just recently purchased a first CZ rifle (550 FS) and am quite enamored of it. Also have a CZ 83 pistol, which is another great firearm. I suppose both of us will be anxious for deer season this year.

CZ makes some very nice rifles. Had that carbine been available when I bought my last Savage hunting rifle there may have been a different outcome.

I have wanted one of their bolt actions for a long time.

ccoyle, I like those 550 FS ... if my gunstore could have ordered one of those I would picked that one. And yes deer season can't come early enough ... LOL

DR.Rob, if you are ever in my neck of the woods, drop by and you can shoot mine...

Thank you RugerOldArmy.

Chris in Va. Thanks... I do like the 527 series almost ordered one, but got the 557 instead.
Looks like time too save up for a 527 now... LOL

Looks quite attractive, and in a handy carbine platform. Certainly like the caliber too. Congrats.

But I'm not impressed that CZ changed to a non-Mauser push-feed on this model.
