Hello all. I have lurked on this site fore a long time and decided to finally sign up. I Am thinking about purchasind an Arsenal Sgl 20 from K-var and am wondering if anyone knows if the parts on this rifle are interchangable with other AKM parts. For example if I have a Wasr 10 could I use the gas piston or bolt from that rifle in the Arsenal one? Also I am at a loss as to the difference between the Sgl 20 and Sgl 21. As far as I can see the specs are the same for both rifles. Perhaps of overlooking something really minor. I have tried to find the answers to this on the web but not had much luck. Thanks!

... not that this will help or hurt you, but I have a mag right now, called the ak. It is put out with mags called the ar, or milsurp rifles, comes out about 1 a quarter. Anyway, with ak's many of the parts can be interchanged, and many can not be, especially furniture; ;they seem to all have a bit diff specs here and there. But it does seem, as long as you have a full size gas tube, that many of the pistons are interchangeable. Same with the bolts.

So im guessing this is something that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and country to country and not reallly an issue of Saiga conversions vs all other AKM Rifles. Could have same issues swapping parts from a Mak 90 to a Wasr for example?

Unfortunately in this case, the Romanians are still using AKM type bolts and bolt carriers, and these are not compatible with the current production AK-100/Saiga Kalashnikovs (these use much skinnier bolt stems).

Not at all.

All Kalashnikovs of their generation have interchangeable parts (some Saiga parts aside [ due to politics ]). This is due to standardization agreements among the Soviet satellite countries.

We're now looking at 4 distinct generations of Kalashnikov:
Gen 1: The original 1940's design with a stamped receiver. Known as the "Type 1 Kalashnikov".
Gen 2: The 1950-1959 design of AK-47 with milled receivers (the type 2 and type 3 Kalashnikovs)
Gen 3: The AKM (1959-1974)
Gen 4: The AK74/AK100 series rifles (1974 to present).

Bulgaria is still producing (and issuing) Type 3 AK-47s, so their rifles would have parts that will interchange with other AK's produced on that pattern (but less interchangeability with the types produced prior and subsequently).

That clears things up a bit for me. Good reply. I was unaware of the different generations of aks. I assumed the were all the same aside from the different calibers used in the 74.

Does this mean an ak 74 bolt could be used on an ak100 rifle chambered in 7.62?

I think it means the bolt carriers may interchange, but the bolts are different because the 7.62x39 is "fatter" than the 5.45x39 making the bolt face different.

This is correct.

You could put an AK74 bolt into an AK103/104, but it wouldn't match the cartridge the rifle was chambered for.

You could exchange an AK103/104 bolt carrier with an AK74 bolt carrier w/o issue.

Back to another of spyke's questions.....what is the difference between the sgl 20 and sgl 21?

I actually found a recent post that stated the difference is that the 20 comes with a 5 round mag and the 21 with a 30 round mag. Not sure if that is the only difference though.

That is the only difference.

Nope it’s not the magazine size. I just got my SGL-20 two weeks ago from J&G Sales, and it came with a 30-round Arsenal magazine.
I think the difference is that the SGL-21 has the rear accessory lug, which my SGL20 does not have.

Says on the kvar site that the 20 has a bayonet lug. Im buying one of these tomo and selling my wasr. good call you think? Anyone had a bad experience with the sgl20?

The SGL-20 and -21 are apparently the same rifle, with the only noted difference of the lack of an accessory lug in the former. Which I guess is no big deal, unless you're planning on attaching a Russian grenade launcher :D

I have an SGL-21, and so far I am very impressed with it. I think you'll be very pleased, the SGL series are heads and shoulders above the Romanian rifles in terms of fit and build quality. Not that I'm particularly knocking the Romanian rifles, I have three (Romak 1, Romak 2 and a G kit build). The SGLs are just in a different class...

You can get another AK and put K-Var on it.:D

Here is a Polytech SP sporting a K-Var set & 922* parts *(A us AK74 type break was in the mail at the time of the picture)
