I am wondering does anyone out west use one of these for coyotes/ varmint hunting from 6-800 meters? If no one uses a k31 for long range hunting, why not? It is a fairly heavy rifle, but so are rifles with target or bull barrels outfitted with bi pods and scopes.
Commercial ammo is kind of limited, and I am not aware of any commercial ammo loaded with varmint bullets, so it would probably require hand loading. Currently all of my hunting experience has been in the thick woods of the eastern US, so I am a novice on any serious long range shooting. I am wondering how everyone thinks the K31 would be suited if I get the chance to do some hunting out west, because right now it is the most accurate rifle I own. Thanks.

At that range the K31 is likely not up to the task, most people who shoot varmints at that distance have specialized set ups. You'd likely be looking at a rebuild with a new barrel, trigger and stock to do it.

I think with a good handload, some training and a scope it is very capable! my personal K31 is incredibly accurate so I think it could take a coyote from your given distance, its just if you are up to the task! But I am sure you are aware of that already. Just my .02$

+1. My K31 is a damn tack driver! I've got mine set up with a St. Marie's clamp on scope mount and a basic scope. I would think if you were to set up a K31 with a Rock Solid Mount and a decent scope it would make for a decent long range rifle.

Where I think the K31 would really shine would be a medium range hog gun (100-300 yds).

I guess for a lot of areas there wouldn't be a darn thing wrong with it. Where I dispatch prairie dogs though, we generally don't skip heavy bullets out across the fields. For those of us in West Tx, a lot of us like to stay .24 caliber or below that has a high probability of breaking up if/when we miss and skip the bullet across the field of fire.

Now down on cutbanks, draws, canyons and such- the K31 would be a hoot on larger critters such as yotes and hogs.

The K31 shines at 6-800 meters. Very capable at that distance. Kind of large for Pdogs, heavy recoil. The GP11 ammo is match grade.

I have a Weaver K4 scope in this K and it shoots steels at 400yds with no problems. I have added a butt pad, cheek rest and muzzle brake for comfort.

That's very true in Kansas cattle & farm country coyote hunting too.

You want high velocity calibers with varmint bullets so they blow apart on ground contact and don't center-punch Mr. Browns prize bull two farms over.

From the responses, it sounds like it would work pretty well for coyote out in canyon country somewhere, as long as I do my part. Unfortunately, we don't have any ranges for even 500 meters around here.

10-96: Do you get a lot of long range shots at hogs out in the open down in Texas? I was always under the impression that hogs stick to the thicker areas.

Fully capable of long range. We manufacture a 75 to 1,000 yard Diopter. We'd never have done it if we didn't know the rifle and the caliber are fully capable of that range shooting.
