K31 or Yugo M24/47

I have both. Love the K31. The Yugo is just kinda blah, nothing special about it. Last time I bought ammo it was $80 a case though, so it had that going for it.

another vote for the K31.

I never heard anyone describe the K31's safety as "clumsy" before... It's actually a bit on the clever side, and definitely not even close to being as bad as some other designs.

Gone are the days of $80/case for 8mm ammo, unless you hit a jackpot somewhere. You can get GP11 ammo or reloadable Prvi ammo for the K31 for the same price as 8mm Prvi. You can find corrosive 8mm for a little less, but not as cheap as it used to be.

Try manipulating a safety with thick winter gloves on. Then tell the K31 safety is more clumsy than the Mauser.

If your gloves are thick enough to not work with the K-31 safety, they aren't going to work with the Mauser 98 safety either:neener:

K-31 all the way. The Yugo 24/47s are very good rifles but really have nothing on the K-31s for workmanship and accuracy.

I've manipulated Mauser, Springfield, and Winchester safties with gloves on -- if you can get your gloved finger through the trigger guard, those safties are easy to manipulate with gloves.

And you can do it silently, holding the rifle in firing position.

The K31 is a fine rifle, but the safety was never designed by a hunter.

Swiss people are so tactical that they never needed any gloves... and they never fight a war when it snowing. they just postpone it ;)

ps: you always have the possibility to mount a bigger safety ring.

Buy both, and try them and choose. They will only increase in value over time anyways, so you won't really lose anything. Sell the one you don't want or you might want to convert the Mauser into a sweet custom for yourself.

Both.

I have a M24/47 and a M48. I paid $100 for my M48, and I'm about to drop around $400 to have it chambered to .308. New barrel, drill/tap, new bolt handle, and low position safety.

I'll be finishing the stock and bedding it.

I'd like to get a K31 before they dry up thought.

K31

They are both nice guns. I have both. But the K31 is
definitely my preference.

If forced to choose between the two the K31 is the easy
choice here.

Like you mentioned in your OP, "Precision Quality".

:)

I'll be the devil's advocate and suggest the ... K31. Whoops, looks like I'm not in the minority. I have both (cept my Mauser is a 48). and I think the K31 is MUCH cooler. The Mauser is just a regular old bolt rifle, the K31 is something special.

K31
It's actually the finest machined rifle I own.
You really have to take one apart to really appreciate the craftsmanship that went into it.

I don't have an M24/47 so I really can't do a comparison between the two. But I do have a K31 and I really like it. I don't think you could go wrong with either, but the K31's seem to be getting scarcer, so maybe get a K31 now and plan for the other later?

I own both and the K31 is hands down the better rifle. In terms of sights, accuracy and workmanship it is a far better rifle. It used to be that you could pick up cases of 8mm for $60, but those days are gone. The price of ammo now is about the same so I can't see any reason to get a 24/47 unless you already have a K31.

I have and love both (well, a K31 and a 98k - not a 24/47). The only thing that needs to be said is this: the K31 draws an inordinate amount of attention at the range (though I use the term "attention" loosely). People who aren't intimately familiar with the milsurp offerings will be intrigued by the straight-pull bolt immediately; the design of the bolt is truly unique, and people actually win competitions with them against modern rifles. There's a lot to be said for a <$200 milsurp rifle that can manage that. Note that I haven't even mentioned the quality of the metal work yet (superb). The K31 was actually the first rifle I ever bought, and I came on to the idea when people started suggesting it in a "Which milsurp rifle?" thread I started on another board. Once I did some reserach on the thing, I knew I needed one. :)

The Yugo is cheap and fun to shoot, but otherwise unremarkable. The Mauser action is extremely common; many modern hunting rifles were patterned on it. Honestly, the only thing the Mauser has over the K31 is cheaper surplus ammo. At present, decent 8 mm surplus will run you around 30 cents/round while GP11 is about 50 cents/round. That said, GP11 is match quality ammunition and the 8mm Mauser surplus is, well...surplus.

They're both pretty cheap, and considering what you'll spend on ammo anyhow I suggest just getting both. Every milsurp shooter needs a Mauser of some type...but if you must have only one, then get the K31 - hands down.

Don't worry about a safety being a hassle to work. Hell i haven't used the safeties on my mosins ever and im still living and breathing. Follow the 4 rules and you'll be fine. I'd get the k31 by the way.

I have six K-31's and one Yugo 48. Throw in another Swiss, a 96/11.. Then there are about fiive of the Model 96 Swedes. The Swiss are the finest finished, fitted of the bunch although the Swedes operate a little smoother. My hands down choice for quality and accuracy goes to the Swiss. Another point, the Swede, being a bit slimmer carries easier.

K31 would be my first choice. Then other Swiss rifles/carbines.
Examples would be the K11 , 96/11.
