I plan on picking up a k31, aka Schimdt-Rubin, in the next month or so. Just a quick question: why is a walnut-stocked version $30 more than one stocked in beechwood? Is there a benefit to walnut that I'm not aware of that justifies the extra cash? If it's just an aesthetics thing, I think I'd rather have the beech. Looks more euro, and it is a euro rifle. Any ideas?

I have one of each. Beech works just fine, walnut just looks a lot better.

just cause its from europe dont mean beans. alot of european rifles favor american walnut.

Walnut is better looking, harder and less prone to warpage than beech. Also, the walnut stocks are less plentiful in K31s than the beech stocks.

I don't know if Beech is harder than walnut, but it certainly is more durable.

Also, there were a lot more Walnut stocked K-31s produced than beech stocked rifles. Selling walnut for a premium is probably just smart marketing.

Walnut is a much prettier wood than Beech (IMO). Walnut is also a very hard wood. Beech and Walnut both can crack. Beech is prone to bruising. K31 Walnut stocks were produced from 1933-1944/45. Beech from 1945-1958. And alittle over 2000 from 1959-1972.

Walnut...

Nice looking bunch, My first was a gun show pick up when cleaned up, refinished, showed a beautiful piece of flame walnut. Got a C&R and acquired 5 more before prices went up, 4 were walnut, one beech. The Beech unless really stained, is much lighter in color, a blond, as compared to the darker tones of walnut, brunett or hazel in ligher shades.

Some of the beech with the rays is very pretty, but generally the walnut is the best looking, hence the higher price.
