K98 Cleaning Rod Question

What is the intended use of the 10" or 12" cleaning rods in a K98 . ..do they figure the guys would've cleaned 12 inches from the front and 12 inches from the rear and call it done? I always thought there was a longer rod in there but from what I can see they're always 10" or 12.5"

Just curious if anyone knew how they were supposed to work?

soldiers were never 'alone' so just grab your buddys cleaning rod, put em together and away you went. That also guarenteed that all of the rifles were never undone at the same time, couldnt clean them all at once.
