K98 Empty Bolt Hold-Open

Is this one of those threads where somebody just wanted to open a can of worms? Talking about modifying a Mauser is an easy way to do it.

I’m curious if a bolt hold-open was (is) a common feature of bolt guns intended to hunt dangerous game? I can see how it would be helpful to know your rifle is empty when there’s an angry Cape buffalo headed your way.

I'd say do whatever you want to make your rifle shoot how you want. It's your rifle. There were 15 million of the things produced, of which about 14 million are in the possession of people who ignorantly think they're "collectible" simply because they own 43. That's like saying your socks are collectible because you own so many :D
I would say that some know less about collecting then they know about guns.

Hey, buy all you want. As the boomer remover gets into full swing here you're going to take a monster bath, but that's a personal problem.

In about 10 weeks we're going to be seeing plenty of estate sales with 20-lots of "millsurps" :D

The ones calling it "boomer remover"... what they don't understand is GenZ's not immune either. Stuff swirling around the net ranges anywhere from "we're all gonna die" to "it's all a hoax".

As to the market for older military rifles, who can truly and accurately predict who'll end up liking what. Old Mausers, in the hands of those who appreciate such things, will keep working as long as ammo and spare parts can be found.

As to the bolt hold-open feature, I haven't read of a connection between the K98 and dangerous game rifles. All I can say about that Cape buffalo is you better make your first one count. You might not get a second.

Olson or WE Smith might have it buried somewhere in their books as they took the time to actually read German military documents. But, remember the Germans went to the Mauser 98 from the GEW 88 which used a clip feed system. Just like the US kept the obsolete magazine cutoff in the 1903, the Germans might have felt the need to indicate to their soldiers to reload or perhaps as a safety measure.

The Czechs started making Mausers after WWI and did not have to follow preconceived ideas drawn from German military doctrine so they allow the bolt to go forward on an empty magazine on their VZ-24.

Karma is a good reason not to tempt mother nature. Sensitivity to others is another good reason.

No one outside of people younger than 19 has a natural immunity and as younger people feel the need to get around, more of them are getting infected and quite a few hospitalized. Losing part of your lung function, perhaps permanently, is not something you want for the rest of your life. I've had a severe case of pneumonia when I was about thirty. Took me a month to get over it and my kind was treatable by antibiotics. This isn't. And having fibrosis of the lungs sets you up for an increased likelihood of future infections of the lung.

Looks like I really got to the heart of the matter there. The only reason that something of which 15 million (over 30 million if you count other 98 variations) is supposedly "collectible" is hording. It's collectible in the way TP is collectible right now, and as soon as fashions change, those "collecting" will be left holding rifles that frankly aren't as nice as a Ruger American and are suitable only for donor actions with a re-done heat treat.

Have fun with that :D
