Wondering if you guys might know about this issue.

I just bought a new Kahr CW9, and took it to the range for 1/2 of the breakin of 100 rounds.

During this range session about two or three times, when I fired the last round the slide didn't lock back, and it turns out the magazine was not snapped fully in so it came out without having to push the mag release.

I figured maybe I bumped the mag release with my finger while firing. However I thought I might ask if there is anything I should be looking out for related to this in the future.

give it

give it another 100 rounds to see, you might just have a bad magazine release. When inserting the magazine, give it a good bump on the bottom after insertion. I think kahr has now came out with an all steel magazine release button, yours should be that way, you might check to see if it is steel or polymer. I never had an issue ever with the polymer and I have 15,000 rounds through my PM9 . If it is the magazine release, I would advise calling kahr and they will send you a new release and spring. A very simple installation to replace to. Not worth sending it back to get that done, but possably to, just a few more break in rounds and everything will seat itself in correctly....Darn nice gun IMO..

thanks Jocko- I figured you'd pop in!

S/N decode says my Kahr was made after May 2008, and it has a plastic mag release. Seems easy to push. I will call Kahr after the next 100 rounds if I still have a problem and see about getting an upgraded metal mag release and maybe a stiffer mag release spring. This is literally right under my middle finger tip. Very easy for me to inadvertently push it.

don't be in a big hurry to switch mag releases. The polmer release is a good release as actually in that release is a peace of steel that makes contact with the magazine. So the polmker part is no realy a big issue. Sometimes there is still some excess flashing left on that release that just needs to be used more to get it right. I would stillget the new release though it in case it doesn't get better. I thiink Kahr will even send it to you free if you tellthem you are having mags pop out. Nice thing about the polymer release button, is you can file it down to suit your needs very easily, if you think you are bumping it....Nice Gun, just put some rounds through it and I think allwilleven get better, including the triggler system, which also seems to smooth out even more after rounds downrange..

OK so today I went and shot another 100 rounds. I was having this issue about 20-30% of the time on empty mags, where rather than the slide locking back, the mag would release.

When I got home, I called Kahr and told them about it. They said "send it back" and gave me a RA#. I am not real keen on sending it back right now.

While cleaning it I noticed a burr on the left side of the feed ramp, so I smoothed that off. After reassembly I put an empty mag in it and pulled the slide back several times and it locked every time.

I think I will probably hang on to the RA and send it back in the event that this problem doesn't clear up after about another 100-200 rounds of breakin. Once it gets cold enough for me to wear clothes that will conceal my bigger pistol then I will probably send it back to them if it is not healed by then.

I also had one failure to feed today. The mag was released magically while in the middle of a magazine, and the round got jammed on the feed ramp (feeding too low).

Irritating. Funny thing is I bought the Kahr based on the better reputation compared to Kel-Tec, and I have had problems from day 1 with this one. My S&W Sigma, OTOH, despite all of the bad press, has been 100% reliable for 500-600 rounds without a single non-ammo-induced failure. So much for reputation relating to actual performance!

give it

if it doesn;'t get right with you, give it to kahr and let them have a shot at it one time. If then it doesn't perform as you expected. Peddle it and move on. You did all you can and you wil have lost confidence in it, so peddle it. I can't brag enough about my two kahrs, 15,000 rounds out of one and 3500 out of the other and never had a magazine pop out, so IMO they are a darn good company but you got one with issues. Now you have a RA#, send it back and let them make it right. There is no comparison between the kahrs and kel tec, trust me on that...been there done that stuff...

I bought two CW9's...one for the wife and one for me. The first range trip was less than encouraging. :fire:

On the first CW9, I was only able to fire 39 rounds before it wouldn't fire anymore due to light primer strikes. I have since detail stripped the slide and have fired 100 flawless rounds. I also removed and reinstalled the mag catch.

On the second CW9, I put 333 rounds down the pipe on the first range trip. Of those, I had the mag pop out at least a dozen times while firing. This was not a grip related issue (I made sure). I also detail stripped the slide and removed then reinstalled the mag catch on this one too. I've since fired 100 flawless rounds through this one too.

On a side note, I primarily used 115grn WWB for break-in. Pistol two also got a diet of 124 grn Gold Dots (not +P), 124 grn HST's (not +P), and 147 grn Winchester Personal Protection. It seems as though the mag drops were more prominent when shooting the JHP ammo...with the exception of the 147 grn which was flawless. I also had two failures to feed with the Gold Dots.

I really wanted to love the 124 grn HST's, but since the 147 grn Winchester's ran flawlessly, they are what is loaded at the moment. Not to mention I can pick them up at my local Walmart.

A heavier, stronger, magazine SPRING sent by Kahr solved my magazine release issues with my CW9. I'm also a southpaw, that may have had something to do with it. The problem manifested itself more while using a "convulsive grip" while point shooting than at other times.

In addition, it's easy to not fully insert the magazine. CHECK that it's fully seated by pulling down the base of the mag with your thumb and forefinger.

humm

I wonder why a heavier magazine spring would solve the issue of the magazine being released accidently. Could you be talking about the magazine release spring instead????

I'm a lefty and have never had one release issue on the PM9 or K9...
