The short version: A few unexpected things happened this month, and bottom line, I need some fast cash, and the only things of any real value I own right now besides my F-150 are guns and a few odd collectibles. Of my guns, the Kahr PM9 is the least used, was the most expensive initially, and I am the worst shot with it of all my guns. Time is of the essence, so that means gun shops and pawn shops, no gun broker or classifieds this time.

The Gun: Kahr PM9 w/ Night Sights & 3 mags (purchased new summer 2008)
-Less than 1k rounds through it, and some light holster wear, night sights still bright
-100% reliable since the break-in

Bottom Line: What can I realistically expect to get for this? What's the lowest offer I should take? Opinions welcome. Buds has them new for $724 with 2 mags.

Night sights glow bright and are highly visible, this is the best picture I could get of them.

I paid $655.00 in January for my PM9 with night sites.
I would not take less than $475.00 for it.

A quick survey of completed gunbroker auctions that people actually bid, with regular sights, $450 seemed about the going rate (figure that those people are paying shipping and transfer $60 we'll say). I would say $525 should be doable, but that depends on where you live.

Thanks for the replies! That's about what I was thinking, high $400s or low $500s.

I live in decent sized city in West Texas, things are not quite as expensive out here as elsewhere in the country.

If your going to limit yours self to pawn shops and gun shops I would be very surprised if you get over $400 for it. I would expect you'll probably get offered in the $300-350 range. I personally wouldn't take less than $500 for it, if I would even take that. If you wander over to the KAHR forum you will get more for it and it'll probably still sell fairly quick.

Good luck

No way you are going to get $500 from a pawn or gunshop. They will offer you $350 tops because they are going to sell it @$500 to $550.

Most shops won't touch something they cannot make $100 on.

^ Appreciate the insight, deep south. I hope I get a few better offers than you've indicated, but you may be right. I think the CM9 has driven down the street price of the PM9 despite the differences between them.

I've never sold a gun over an electronic medium. I know I'd have to pay an FFL to ship it to their FFL, and frankly, even with a quick deal over the internets I don't know how quickly I'd get my money / if I can trust people I've never met. Definitely an idea, though. Many thanks!

You do not have to ship the gun via an FFL. You can ship it yourself to a FFL via common carrier. You have to send it overnight so it is not cheap and sometime is cheaper to send it through a FFL who can ship it priority mail.

If it were me I would sell it here. $450 + cost of shipping. This is still going to get someone a nice Kahr with nights and an extra mag at righ around $500 assuming overnight of $50.

If you have a paypal account you could take payment instantly via that as long as you are descreet about it. This is going to net you $100 to $150 more than going to a shop.

Although it's true you can send it as a non ffl to the buyers ffl but what I am increasingly running up against is the ffl wont receive from a non ffl.
Both my ffl guys have started doing this in the last year.

Thanks for the info. I'll do some research on shipping. I know UPS ships guns overnight but I always thought it had to be FFL to FFL. I do have a PayPal account, as I do some ebay stuff, but I assume from your post that eBay/PayPal expressly doesn't allow firearms transactions.

I shipped a pistol last year overnight via UPS and it cost a staggering $51.00.

Then you need to find a new FFL IMHO. Yes there are guys who are doing this because they think they are loosing money because people ar buying guns off of GB and classifieds but this mentality is born out of ignorance. IMHO

Most of the guns I buy from an individual would never have been bought from the local shop.

This is correct. Tell the person to send you the cash as a "gift". There is nothing illegal about epayment for guns. Ebay/Paypal are not gun friendly.

This is the way to go. You can also ask your local FFL what they will charge you to transfer and ship the gun. Mine does it for $10 + the cost of shipping which is $15 via priority mail. I use the flat rate boxes.

^ I will certainly consider this.

Aside from the shipping/FFL issue, the only thing nagging me is this: what happens if the buyer gets denied after the background check on their end and I've already spend their $$? That would certainly screw up the whole process. So, theoretically, I'd have to wait to until they're approved/have possession of the gun before I can cash their money order/spend their electronic bank transfer.

The gun would be returned to you or the FFL who sent it. If it is a true denial not just a "wait or temp hold" then you would have to make good on the cash but I have bought and sold things from my personal collection many from ptivate sellers and this has never come up. This is no guarantee it won't but I would not be worried about it.

The other option is a face to face transaction. You might find someone within a short drive of you in TX that would want to take it off your hands for cash. Simply verify that they are a TX resident and have them sign a bill of sale that states they are not a prohibited person and you will get maximum value for the pistol. IMHO you can get $500 in a FTF.

With the release of the CM9, this could be tricky. Currently, the lowest-priced PM9 that I could find online is $532.79. With shipping and all, I imagine it would be $575-$600. Night sights obviously add $50-$100 in cost, so you could argue that $625 is the lowest you could accept.

But then there is the issue of your potential customers not valuing or not understanding the Night sights. To them, they may not care less. $575 in that case could be argued.

BUT, like I said, the CM9 is out there and can be bought new for $400. For the purposes of these micro 9mm pistols, the PM9 really doesn't offer anything worth the extra $150, in my opinion (I like that the PM9 comes in all-black, but that's a non-factor here). So a potential customer could get a CM9 with Night sights for about $500.

Basically, no easy answer. Are you selling it to buy something else? To pay bills? To simply consolidate your collection? This would obviously be a big factor, too. Common sense says $600-$625 as a lowest offer, but I think common sense may be wrong this time.

I have to agree with DeepSouth. I'd bet $300 to $400 will be top offer from Gun Store/Pawn shop. Offer it on the Kahr Forum as he said, and you should post it on the Glock Forum, and here. Let them know you're in a hurry and will consider all reasonable offers. I would expect a fast sale at $475.00 plus shipping. If you go with paypal be aware they charge 3% of the purchase price as a surcharge.

It's not your problem if the buyer cannot pass a NICS check. You sold the gun...it isn't yours anymore.

If the buyer is denied by NICS it is a matter between the buyer and his FFL.

Selling it to pay bills. This is not a "I'll be kicked out of my apartment on September 1st" situation, but the need is pressing. Bottom line, I own 4 handguns and the Kahr is the one I can do without.

And on the question of a face to face transaction, how is it done? Do you meet in a Walmart parking lot and make the exchange? Sounds kinda shady/dangerous. In a gun show situation its different, as you're in a secured area with people all around.

Even though I've been buying/selling pistols since 2004, I've always traded guns towards other guns or consigned them to a local gun shop (time wasn't an issue). A lot of this is new to me so thanks everyone for the info.

I've bought and sold quite a few guns over the years face to face. I just meet at some public parking lot during the day (Office Depot, Walmart, IHOP, movie theater), ask them if they can legally own it and you are good. I've also bought and sold some at gun shows. You can post it on a gun forum like here as a FTF sale, you will typically get a CHL holder that way. If I felt uncomfortable in any way I would walk, say I decided to keep it.
