I've tried searching online for gun laws in Kansas/Missouri but can't seem to find any updated info. Does anyone know where I can find this information? I am visiting from CA and would like to introduce my brother into firearms. In CA, I would be able to find all the info on the CA DOJ website, but I can't seem to locate the information here. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can point me in the right direction here. Thanks.

What specifics are you looking for? Since you're coming from California, I can pretty much guarantee that MO laws are much more appealing that CA's!!

Post your questions here, we have lots of MO and KS residents here. Or, you can PM me specifics, and I'll fill you in on the MO side of the questions.

ETA: Quck summary: We need a PTA (Permit to Acquire) to buy handguns. That means $10 bucks and a instant to 1 week wait from the county sherriff to get a 'permission slip' to buy a handgun. Rifles do not need a PTA. We have CCW. We allow Full Auto, but no suppressors.

What exactly is your question(s) about Missouri or Kansas? Each follow the "peaceful journey" mindset (guns & ammo locked up while transporting). Or if you have CCW permit you can carry in Missouri. Kansas will not issue CCW (CHP) permits until January 1, 2007 and their resiporsity issues have yet to be defined.

If you need more info:

Google Missouri & then Kansas, each will give you a link to state government home pages. From there in the search box type gun laws. This should take you to the statutes concerning their gun laws.

Or, go to: packing.org, opencarry.org, or gunowners.org. Each has info or links that describe current laws for all states.

Hope this helps.

My own impression is that Kansas has a "don't ask, don't tell" approach to gun law. I have, on occasion, carried a shotgun in rear window of my pickup and have never been questioned. As far as shortarms, my range owner explained to me that State (Kansas) law allows you to carry in your vehicle as long as in plain sight; However; counties and cities have restrictions on this, no one seems to know what they are. For what it's worth, I've never been asked, "Do you have a gun on your person or in your vehicle?" And many many others I know have not either.

I'm looking for information regarding requirements to purchase handguns/long arms, transportation laws, and firearms that are legal to purchase (in CA. we are restricted to certain firearms:( )

Thanks for the help!

Most stores I've seen around here have signs posted that they will not sell handguns or long guns to people from certain states. California is usually at the top of the list(followed by N.Y., N.J., And Mass.). I think it has to do with the fact that we aren't allowed to buy if we go to your state.
I've seen these signs at Walmarts, Bass Pro Shops, pawn shops, etc. but not every shop, so it might be at the discretion of the owner.

In short, in Missouri, one must be18 to buy long guns, no need for permit, and 21 to buy hand guns, though you need a Permit to Acquire to buy them.

As far as I know, I've never heard about any banned guns, on the state level.

Not sure about the transportation laws, though.

We have covered the purchase requirements so far.

Transportation: In MO, if you are over 21 and can legally own firearms, you can carry a loaded and concealed handgun, or rifle too, I suppose, in your vehicle, even if you are not a MO resident. That's how we got car carry and ccw in the first place.

Now, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. If you're coming in to visit your brother and get him into firearms...well. You should be able to bring whatever gun with you, no problems bringing it into MO. If you want to buy one....well, now that gets complicated. YOu can buy one, but it will have to be transferred back to Cali, and then you know all the stuff involved there. Your brother can buy one here, but then he has to do the PTA, which depending on which county he is in, could be a few minute wait, to a full week. If he's in St Louis..well...good luck getting all that done in a week!

So, depending on what you mean by getting you brother into guns, it might be best to post where you are going to be in MO or KS, and when, and then maybe some of us MO-KS residents can work with you, meet up at a range, etc. Either way, we need a little more info about what it is you're trying to do here...
