Great news for the great state of Kansas. Thanks to everyone who has been writing our Congress men and women especially the hard work coming from the Kansas State Rifle Association.

Today, Governor Sam Brownback (R) signed House Bill 2052 into law. This new law takes effect on July 1, 2013.

HB 2052 will make the following pro-gun improvements in Kansas:

-Exempts the lawful discharge of firearms—whether for hunting or self-defense—from criminal prosecution.

-Requires that government and public buildings that prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms for self-defense must screen all visitors for weapons. This would ensure that ALL individuals who enter the buildings are disarmed, not just the law-abiding citizens who choose to follow the law. If a building lacks the adequate security measures necessary to screen all visitors, then residents with a concealed carry license would be allowed to carry a firearm to protect themselves while visiting that particular building.

-Makes the personal information of concealed carry license applicants confidential and exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests.

-Exempts law enforcement officers from the training requirements necessary to obtain a concealed carry license.

-Authorizes school officials to allow staffers and visitors to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense.

Here's a link to the other pro-gun bills that have passed (not sure if the link will work):

I'm sure the Governor was lobbied hard by both sides on the issue.

It would be appropriate for Kansas residents to send a "thank you" postcard to him and the person(s) who sponsored the initial bill.

If in agreement with the rest of their political stance, it would be nice to tell them they have your support should they run for another term.

They did the right thing. Let them know it.

The KSRA has worked EXTREMLY hard on these bills. They deserve the thanks and support for their hard work.
A special Thank You is well deserved by the KSRA President, Patricia Stoneking, for all the effort she has put into this.

As a proud Kansan this is indeed a great day for those of us who have worked so hard and been involved with our representatives on these matters, but let us not forget that the battle at the national level rages on and as Americans the fight is not over. All of that being said...it feels really good to be from the great state of Kansas today!

Yep, very happy to be a Kansas resident. Ive lived many different places and this is a great place to raise a family. Definitely will write the law makers and give them a big thumbs up!

-Authorizes school officials to allow staffers and visitors to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense.

It's a shame it requires authorization from school officials at all. Shame it doesn't just fall under the "public buildings" law, which would grant full concealed carry unless detection equipment was present.

But yes, looks like a good day irregardless. Sad that my own state isn't doing more (such as pass the constitutional carry amendment, allow carry on higher education without permission of the college, etc).

Once again, I'm proud of the people of Kansas. A special THANK YOU to PATRICIA STONEKING. She also carried the pro-gun message forth last night at the Dole Institute at Kansas University. I encourage all of you to join the Kansas State Rifle Assn and here is the link to check it out. http://www.ksraweb.net/membership.html Also, please thank the representatives who supported this legislation and helped it through, including Governor Brownback.
