Well the worst possible thing happened to me today, I was parted from my favorite carry knife. I work at a sporting goods store and I was tagging bulk ammo and separating it for display. One scuzzy looking fellow was hanging around with his wife and were being the run of the mill browsers. I happened to be cutting a box open and was asked by a regular customer to get a box from a shelf up high. I obliged closed my Spyderco knife and set it down on the ledge behind the counter and helped the guy.

When I returned scuzz bucket walked away towards his wife. I picked the box up and reached for my knife and it was gone. Looked on floor, checked pockets, and looked around the counter to no avail. At this point I could see scuzzy looking around the corner at me and kept leaning out to peek at me. I approached him and asked if he needed help (he was stuttering and got out a "I'm my good") then he walked away and as he turned the corner took off out the door. I watched the CCTV later and sure enough my suspicion was confirmed he moved on it the second I turned away.

Just a reminder guys, don't let your stuff out of your sight. Scum like this are all around us out there.

My sincere condolences. That sucks.

It could have happened to any of us who
have (unwarranted) faith in humanity,
especially where we work.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm reminded why I have this habit of always -
always, always - fold my Spyderco Manix 2 and
put it back in my pocket. It's second nature for me.

Lousy thief. You were using a good knife on the job? That's what $3 chinese Kobalt utility folders are for. Even throw the blade away when dull and put in a new one. Lesson learned. Joe

1. why are you using your own equipment on the job?

2. did you call the police? was a report of theft prepared?

3. did you submit a copy of the surveillance tape to the police for ID?

Full report - this is not a cheap knife, correct? Absolutely a full report and your bosses should be assisting you on this one.
I don't even let people borrow my expensie knife - they can use the Leatherman. :)

Well this Spyderco was not exactly expensive ($24) it was just a G10 but I really enjoyed carrying it. I use my own knife/multi tool at work simply because I hate using the razor blade type that you have to hold open. Plus a good 90% of the time it is way easier for me to carry my own pocket knife than deal with the bulky razor blade type. Honestly, for 3 years now I have never had a problem at my work with this and I have carried more expensive knives.

As far as the police are concerned, I know the locals pretty well and I gave them a description physically what he looked like plus his wife (I doubt they will lose much sleep over a $24 knife though).

Yeah, definitely a lesson learned on this one. Usually I put my knife back in my using the pocket clip but I set it down for a moment since it was a few feet away. Got burned on this one and I'm lucky it was not a more expensive/personal item.

If he has enough guts to come back in my store, I will tell him to his face we do not welcome thieves in this establishment. (Nice and loud so everyone can hear me). The only real bright sides to this are:
1). Reminded myself to keep my guard up
2). Forced me to buy another pocket knife (which I do not mind doing) I got a Buck Knife brand 750 Red Point that is pretty slick if I may say so
3). The Spyderco had actually gotten chipped in 3 places on the blade, so I hope he chops his whole hand off trying to fix it

Thanks for all the replies, even though it got me down I'll keep on keeping on.

Keep a copy of the tape for your records and put send it to the local News shows (cable included). Perhaps someone will call in and report their "cousin" hoping for a reward.

I don't know what it is with people stealing knives. Ever since I was a kid my knives have gone missing.

When I was 10 years old we hired movers, and they stole my leatherman wave that took me forever to save up for. They also took an early 19th century silver dollar my grandfather had given me.. I should have packed my valuables myself but I didn't know any better at the time. Who steals from a 10 yr old.. makes my blood boil to think about it. I really hope they burn for that one.

Lesson learned though. Trust must be earned. And don't hide things in your sock drawer

Just an idea for a carry knife to use at work. I got tired of dulling up my blades that I liked to keep really sharp working at a seed company, but I hated the bulky folding utility knives. I found a knife that Stanley makes that is a utility knife that extends out of the handle. It is much thinner, locks open, and of course, has the replaceable blades. Worked out well for me, might be worth a try. They are cheap too. BTW, I found mine at Walmart.

My son & I were fishing one day about 5yrs. ago. I hit a snag & lost the last plactic worm I had. As I set down my $300.00 rod & reel combo so I could tie on a new hook, a shady character walks by. I use my brand new Repella fishing plyers, set them down next to my rod & reel & tell my 10yr. old son " I gota go back to the jeep & get more wormes, I'll be back in a bit." My jeep is less than 1/4 mile away. When I get back, my plyers are missing. So I ask my son. " Hay Mike, did you use my plyers ? " He says, " No dad, I've been fishing the whole time." I said to myself, " That s*** b** turned around, & stole my plyers." So I start looking for him. I knew he was still in the area because he would have had to pass me to get back to the main road. After about 5 min. I spot him in the tree line making his way to the main road. So I run up to him & say 'Hay pal, did You find my brand new Rapella fishing plyers ?" He said "No." I said "ur full of s***! I take out my cell phone & say " I'm calling I.S.P., I have the last four #'s of my ss.# etched in the nose of those plyers so u can give me my plyers or go to jail. He looked at me all scared & said " I did'ent know they were yours." That was B.S. because they were next to my rod & reel combo. The only reason he did'ent try to steel that is because he could'ent hide it . He went in his pocket & I said " throw them in the tree line & get [] out of here. I was bluffing about the ss.#'s. but it worked. :cuss::fire:

My Dad taught me to always fold it up and put it back in your pocket but never lay it down! IMO for work I would go with Stanley Folding Razorblade knife with a belt pouch.

I use an Irwin folding utility knife. It's smaller than all the other folders and is designed so that the button used to remove the blade can't be engaged while cutting. It's just a little more than the others. The only downside to it so far is that it's a tip down pocket clip.

Gerber makes an even smaller, much lighter one, but it looks less robust.

I keep an el cheapo $1 utility knife at work for a loaner. My pocketknives go right back into my pocket and are never loaned.

We have an update everyone! I was called to the managers office and told to go to the CCTV room to meet the manager "he had something to give me". I'm thinking I did something horrible and trying to think of what. Open the door he says, "Know why you're here?" Me: "Uhhh, no. Just got here." He throws an envelope at me and I open it up. Behold! My Spyderco G10 inside with a note that simply said "Sorry I thought it was mine." Manager said a character that looked like Shrek came in and dropped it off this morning and didn't say anything.

I suppose 2 things may have lead to this ending.
1.) Telling the local PD (of 4 cities I know well/ socialize with regularly) his description etc
2.) Posting to facebook a description and having my friends repost etc.

I talked to the one PD from a local town and he thinks the guy in question is a volunteer fire fighter/ construction woker. The description I gave him matched a photo he showed me. I had ranted to him about what a jerk this guy was and he was pretty furious himself that someone would do something of this nature. I believe he was persuaded to return the knife (anyone remember the bar of soap in the sock from Full Metal Jacket?).

All and all happy it is back, and I hope everyone learns from my mistake like I have.

Good thing a scumbag grabbed it rather than a kid. This could have been a lot worse. Congrats on getting it back, no matter the value.

Nice and well played sxcamaro05! I had a customer steal from me recently and I know who she is so I'm playing Sherlock Friggin Holmes too until she comes back. It does feel better to know who it was.

I recently switched to a different carry knife, and I think it might be the exact same one that Hunter125 mentioned. I too got it from Walmart, a Stanley QuickSlide II Utility Knife model 10-812 for $8. I adjusted the tension on the pocket clip a bit to make it secure better to my pocket, increased the tension on the lock mechanism, lubed it up, and replaced the regular duty Stanley razor blade it came with with a heavier duty Stanley 11-931 blade that I bought from Home Depot. I LOVE IT. In fact it has now replaced the "expensive Benchmade G-10 Roll-lock AFCK with 4 inch blade" that I have been carrying for the past 6 years.

Stanley makes a QuickSlide, QuickSlide II, and QuickSlide III

I prefer the Stanley QuickSlide II:
