Keeping a gun in the car? Yes or no. If so, how?

never had a problem with this solution.
But you can see how this would be a problem, on panic stops or a collision, can't you?

I just think that finding some way to positively retain it would be a more prudent solution.

No, I can't. I've been hit from behind twice while storing my firearm in this manner and it didn't budge, even when the person who hit me was doing 50mph. I drive in New Orleans on a regular basis where "panic stops" are a rather familiar daily occurrence.

The holster wedged between my driver seat and the console is very difficult to remove, even when I want to remove it.

So, it's not an issue for me.

For longer trips that to the 7-11 I use a "Safe Packer". It fastens to the seat belt, can be left unlatched for quick access and is better than a "never ready holster or box". Got mine from Dillon.

This is my humble opinion!

A place to lock my gun down securely when the law/courtesy demands? Yes.. Absolutely.

As I'm not the only one with keys to the car, (or access to them) I won't be leaving anything requiring "responsibility" unattended, locked or no, in the car on any sort of long-term basis.

Caution beats Convenience for me.

I have two Winchester 30-30s, one is clearly a beater I bought at a pawn shop for $150 many yrs ago. One I bought is pristine and still in cosmoline. My beater goes everywhere and often just sits in the windowrack of my truck for weeks.

Leaving a weapon in an un-occupied vehicle for any length of time is an accident waiting to happen. I`m not talking about going to the store,in the parking lot at work, etc.
Really don`t get the point but that`s just me.

As opposed to what, leaving it on your coffee table, hall closet, under yor bed, in your tool chest?
Is there a certain time that elapses in which they are more at risk than a trip to the store or 10hrs a day 5 days a week at work?
I have many guns that are secured in safes almost all the time and a few others almost none of the time but for those that are not locked up I see no inherent risk in having it locked in the truck as opposed to someplace in my house or shop unsecured.
Every situation is different and my vehicels aren't parked far from my door if they are not in the garage, I am not advocating leaving guns unsecured in a apartment complex parking lot but there are things that can be done in the car to secure the weapon fron smash and grab breakins.

I concur X-rap. I'm the only one with keys to my truck. I don't leave anything in plain sight in my vehicle. I have a rather loud car alarm installed in my truck that sends me a text message if it goes off. If I'm away from my vehicle for more than an hour, my pistol is locked in a car safe. If I have to park somewhere that might be a higher risk area, I try to park under streetlights or where my vehicle is in plain view of a security camera. If I am parking at a venue, I try to park near security and/or near a high foot traffic area.

There is plenty you can do to avoid the smash and grab break-in attempts and I have had zero attempts made on any vehicle I have owned for over 40 years of driving, so either I'm lucky or being proactive has paid off.

ps - Never park on the street in downtown New Orleans! Always pay to park!

Your truck sends you a text if someone get's in/alarm goes off?

I gotta call Jeep.....

But I have to say... if I'm not as worried about the $500 gun and $20 in ammo that could be taken as I am the actual vehicle being taken or need repair.

I use a second gun and either take it inside when I get home or lock it in a gunvault when I am not in the truck

I live out in the sticks. When I go to town I may have half a dozen stops to make. Transferring my EDC every time would be impractical and time consuming. The EDC is in my pocket 24/7/365. There are also guns that live in the console of my car and suv all the time. Works for me.

This has been my 24/7 vehicle carry for many years. I've never seen any reason to change it.

Depends on the state. This used to be fine but will now days get your butt in jail in SC. Has to be in a glove box or center console, not by the door.

Stupid if you ask me, but that's been the rules for quite a while now.

I have my Ruger P90 in a soft-sided zipper case in the driver-side door pouch. I keep the zipper partially open, so the case effectively functions as a holster. It's a dark grey suede case. Due to the way my car's interior shadows, it's effectively impossible to see it from the outside. Even if you could see something, it closely resembles the black cloth zipper cases that cars' manuals are stored in, which are frequently kept in door pouches.

When travelling I usually have a pistol either in the center console or the drivers door pocket depending on the vehicle we are in. At one time we had a Ford Aerostar van and I could reach around to the pocket on the back of the passengers seat easily so I put a pistol there. It was just the wife and I so kids or passengers were not a concern.

This is my solution when I travel. My carry gun is still in my pocket, my "car gun" goes here.

When I get out of the car, the black towel goes over the seat and holster. Tinted glass, black seat, black towel, black strap, black holster, black gun ... there is no way you know what is under the towel.

For you folks that don't have Concealed Weapons Permits ... this might not fly in your state.

Generally, the chances of your car getting broken into are MUCH MUCH higher than that of your home.

+1 on the Gunvault. It keeps my pistol secure within arms reach at all times and I don't have to worry about it going flying when I have to make "sudden" stops. Houston drivers taught me that years ago.

most of time its on me, but I do have lock boxes in each truck, I don't normally leave a shooter, only if its a location where I'm unable to conform to their requirements. it happens in teh city and state facilities here off an on.
