I have been looking on Gunbroker for a Kel-Tec P11 or PF-9 and came across a Kel-Tec P40.

Do any of you know any thing about this gun? My thoughts were that a pocket 9mm would be a great back up or alternative cc weapon. However if I could get a gun it a similar size with more fire power would that be better???

This is not a gun I would shoot 1000's of rounds thru for fun, so being a joy to shoot is not a top priority. I was just wondering if any of you have one or have shot one and would like to comment on the experience.

With out going in to the whole 9mm vs .40 S&W debate again....How do you like your Kel-Tec's over all, p11 or any other version?

Thanks

Texian

Kel-Tec made the P40 for a relatively short while several years ago.

The problem was, they got way too many warranty claims & returns to fix perfectly fine guns.

They are sprung stiff, and kick hard. Too many inexperianced new shooters were limp-wresting them and they didn't work for them.

SO, back they went to Kel-Tec Warrenty repair, and they worked perfectly when they got there.

K-T just decided it was too much trouble.

Got a friend that has a P40 and loves it. I've been carrying a P11 for 13 years now and still like it. I think .40 is a little much for a little pistol this size and weight, JMHO, so I prefer 9x19 in a gun this size. It's a powerful enough round and carries plenty of firepower.

I'd almost opt for the .40 since .40 S&W ammunition is alot easier to find right now than 9mm is. It's a nicer bullet with more stopping power than a 9mm, I'd go for it.
Too bad Kel Tec stopped making them because so many novices didn't know how to take the recoil and not limp wrist them.

Kel-Tec makes excellent CC weapons I carry the PF-9, Yet a 40 sounds interesting. I also was unaware that they made such an animal. Like the previous posts stated a 9mm is fine for self-defense

Was the P40 a different gun from the P11 or was it just a different barrel/mag? I seem to remember there was a kit for converting the P11 into a P40 but I may be wrong on that. I would love to grab a P40 barrel for mine if it wasn't too expensive.

They were both pritty much identical guns, not counting caliber of course. Like others have said, too much user error caused K-T waay to many head-aches for them to want to continue the P40 line.

They made and sold a P40 pistol and also a conversion kit. The conversion kits pop up on GB from time to time. I purchased a kit and got the slide hard chromed, found a couple of extra mags and still haven't got a chance to fire a round through the thing.

People have said they are a handful and like Texian said I don't plan on putting 1000s of rounds through it but it should be a nice carry package when I'm comfortable with shooting it.

I didn't think it was all the bad to shoot. Let someone talk me out of it. Big mistake.

My buddy has the Kel-tec in .380 and that is a comfortable match. I can't imagine consistently controlling the Kel-Tec in .40S&W in a similar sized frame.

My Kahr PM-40 has very aggressive recoil and twisting action, and it is chambered in a larger and heavier frame. In fact I intend to Mag-Na-Port mine in the near future to make it a more comfortable shooter.
