Picked up a NIB Kel-Tec PF-9 with a green frame and a stainless slide. Heard a lot of folks say a lot of good things about the gun but when I took the gun out of the box and racked the slide, I saw something fly out of it. Wasn't really sure because it was a quick blur but after looking around the floor, I found a tiny spring ...

... Looking at the parts list diagram in the manual, it appears to be the trigger spring. Now I'm beginning to have my doubts about getting it -- if the gun is falling apart without even being fired, what's going to happen when I actually shoot it?

Question -- should I get it fixed and hang on to it or get rid of it?
 
I had one that after less than 300 rounds the trigger return spring popped out. I have read several gun reviews in magazines (American Rifleman, Shooting Illustrated) where the same thing happened to the review gun! OF course, they said they sent it back and Kel Tec fixed it and that was the end of the problem. I sent mine back and jokingly asked for my money back, and Kel Tec cut me a check! So, although I would never buy another one, they at least stood by their product. My thing is, it could have malfunctioned when I needed it the most and I would have been out a whole lot more than money.
 
Me, I'd fix it and shoot it about 500 rounds to prove it, then carry it. That's my routine with any auto. Kel Tec has perhaps the best customer service in the industry, not that I've ever used it. 12K or so in my 12 year old P11 to date with no problems. I'm not really interested in the PF9, but am going to get a P3AT soon.
 
Yep, just because someone on the KT line had a bad day and didn't get the spring in right, you should be able to put it in correctly and enjoy the rest of the gun. It isn't endemic of the breed....you just got an 'oopsie'.

No, you shouldn't have to do that...but I agree with MCgunner and would fix and shoot it. If you call KT you probably can get them to send you a free mag or two for the inconvenience and being nice about it. Give it a try!
 
I should mention that the trigger appears to work fine. Might it be a spare spring from another gun or from someplace else? It's just the only spring of that size & shape that I see in the entire diagram.
 
That's pretty scary. I looked at one the last gun show and just couldn't warm up to how absurdly thin the gun is. Heck, I thought my P11 was skinny! It's like shooting a credit card.
 
Either send it in for repair, take it back to the store since it is unfired and make them send it in for you, or disassemble it, and verify everything is in the correct place and shoot the crap out of it before you use it for CCW.:D
 
I wouldn't fire it until somebody who knew what they were doing checked it out. This is one HUGE reason why I have stayed away from KelCrap. I keep reading about what awesome customer service they have. Well I would prefer good quality control over good customer service. You would think somebody in the company would have figured it is cheaper to make the gun right the first time, than spending all the money on shipping guns back and forth having to be fixed. You don't need to tell me how you have a KelTec that has been flawless as I don't need to hear that, they probably have the highest, or one of the highest return rates of any pistol manufacturer and I will not contribute to a company that knowingly ship firearms they know are not up to par. I looked at a P3AT yesterday that still had metal shavings in the action and burrs in many different places. Rant off.

Have someone look at it and then see if it works. Kel Tec makes fine guns (I have one and it's funtioned flawlessy) regardless of some of the other posts.
If need be Kel Tec will make it right, they have excellent customer service.
 
I've had 4 Kel-Tecs with zero problems.

I have one Kimber and the extractor broke in less than, maybe, 300 rounds rendering the pistol a single-shot. By some people's logic, I should rant that Kimbers are terrible pistols and everyone should stay away from them.

ANYTHING mechanical can and will break, or be put together incorrectly at some time. Who here hasn't bought a new vehicle and had to take it back to the dealer for some kind of issue right off the bat?

Call keltec and see if they recognize the spring. That's not a PF9 spring, but I would still be leery about firing the gun as there is still the question of what a non-pf9 spring was doing in a PF9...

Howdy,

I just took mine apart here at my desk to verify and that spring could not have come from the PF9 by sliding it open!

I wonder if some guy (I would never do that) put that spring in there to get a responce at the counter from the salesman. They would have thought that the salesman would open the slide to show it.

I would like to see the salesmans face! :uhoh:

Regarding the PF-9, go to KTOG.org bulletin board and see what your serial number is vs. the more current models. There are several upgrades that the factory is performing to some of the early models at no charge, other than one way shipping to them. I recently got a PF-9 that i found could have some problems due to the production date. I will be sending it back to KT and they will replace the entire frame to fix the problem. The factory will not re-open from the holidays until monday 1/7. Good Luck, and go to KTOG for hours worth of info on your pistol.

As Alan has already learned, that is 100%, absolutely NOT a PF9 spring. Nor did he rack the slide, as someone suggested, to get the spring to fall out. He picked up the gun out of the box, and the spring fell out, probably from the mag well where ended up after whoever, Kel-tec, distributor, dealer, customer, etc dropped it in that box. It was never a part of that purdy little pistol... which needs to be shot. ;)
 
Okay, weather permitting and no unforeseen circumstances popping up, I'll put some live ammo through it on Saturday.
