I sent Kel-Tec an email in late Nov and asked if the SU-16 could handle M193 mil ammo as well as 223 Rem, since the the manual specifies 223 Rem only.

Here's the response I received today. I guess this makes it official. :)

Jack,

Yes, you can use the 223 rem and the M193 ammo if the round is 5.56 Nato.

Thank you and have a nice holiday,

You could have just looked at the photo of the SU-16 on KEL-TEC's website. It tells you it is chambered in 5.56x45mm N.A.T.O under thier logo.

i have a similar question, about my colt. when i did my research (on the errornet of course) the advice given was that if the reciever says 5.56, it can fire both 5.56 and .223, but if it says .223 if should only fire .223, and not 5.56.

so my reciever says .223, but the barrel says 5.56.

not a big deal to me, as all i'm planning on having to use is .223 fmj, 55 gr black hills is inexpensive and i'm pleased with its accuracy.

Manual says 223 Rem only

Reaper,

I noticed the the Web site picture shows 5.56, that's why I asked Kel-Tec to clear up the issue....Manual says use only 223 Rem. I've read every post on every forum and all seem to be using 5.56 NATO without any problems.

Here's a quote right our of the manual:

"The SU-16 rifle is designed and chambered for the .223 Remington cartridge. The type of ammunition is also stated on the right side of the receiver. Do not use any other ammunition."

It's my understanding that a rifle chambered for 5.56 mil spec can accept .223 Rem, but not the other way around.
