Do you think that the Kel Tec is as good as a comparably priced AR.
Why and why not?

Thanks

Good in what regard?

Accuracy and reliability are comparable. But the edge in durability goes to the AR. The SU16 was designed with maximum portability in mind, which means extreme light weight. The flipside to that is the gun not being quite as rugged.

My personal opinion? In a rifle, I'll take the AR. But for a 5.56mm pistol, the SU16-based PLR-16 has it all over the AR pistols for aesthetics, ergonomics and weight. Love my PLR. It's accurate and has been 100% reliable thus far.

All of those kel tecs are comparatively lightweight, if that was something important to you.

at about US$500.00, it'd be hard to find an AR to compare it with...

Off hand, I'd say no- the Kel Tec is a trick gun - light weight, inexpensive, folding (it's a pretty good trick, IMO), the AR is a actual military design rifle.

Don't get me wrong- the SU-16 is a great rifle for what it is, but IMO, it's a different class of rifle than an AR.

I'd suspect that an inexpensive AR would last way longer than an SU, but it's entirely possible that most owners would never wear out an SU either.

The KelTec may not be a good replacement for an AR, and M&P Sport seems like a better option.

Depends on what one wants. The SU-16C is 4-1/2 pounds and only 25" long folded; The M&P Sport is 6-1/2 pounds and 32" long collapsed.

If someone is after a lightweight carbine to pack with them hiking or somesuch, the SU-16 has a lot to offer. It just wouldn't be the best choice for running carbine courses or other heavy use applications.

^ In regards to weight, you can always get a CAR model AR15 with a polymer lower and keep the accesories to a bare minimum to keep the weight down.

Both are good rifles, but the support and countless options for AR parts make it a better choice. If you just want something for fun and save a few hundred dollars, the Keltec may be a good option.

The Carbon 15 is still a pound heavier than the SU16C

Kel Tec is pretty much unsurpassed in creating featherweight guns. My PMR-30 tips my scale at 19.8 ounces fully loaded with 30 rounds. The P32, P3AT and PF-9 are the lightest in their class, as is the SU16 and PLR-16.

Come to think of it, I don't think there's a lighter weight production firearm than the P32 in any chambering. 6.8 ounces for that little critter. I have watches that weigh almost that much.
