The noise I heard as my Cold Steel Recon fell out of my shorts pocket, slid off the side of the kayak and into the water. Ce la vie.

Ah.. too bad.
My edc stuff is all replaceable....as bad as we hate to lose it.
The worst part is doing without on the remainder of the kayak trip.
I think that's why I like to carry a leatherman in addition to my pocketkife.

When I read the thread title, I knew something (probably a pocket knife) had gone in the drink...

Sorry about the tough luck, OP.

That awful "kerplunk" sound has been a feature of life working out of small skiffs for a lot years for me (and that includes everything from knives to pliers to car keys -both mine and my customers...). It's definitely one of those sinking feelings...

I long ago learned to add a lanyard for any small tools that I'm working around the water with (I even figured out how to put a lanyard on a screwdriver...). All of mine are just improvised with a short doubled trace of 30 or 50lb mono - that's easily removed or discarded if not needed. I do keep a brand new full sized Griptilian blade on board my skiff as a backup - and it's fully greased (all metal parts) and has a lanyard as well. Around saltwater, dropping something that sinks out of sight isn't the only way to lose a tool so you learn to protect any tool that has to be kept onboard - but will rarely see any use...

The oft mentioned Swedish wonders, Mora kniives, are great for boating. Sharp, if stainless virtually rustproof, and inexpensive to replace. Wonder if any of them float?

Too bad they don't make folding knives.

That is why when I'm around water the expensive knives stay home or in the truck and the Elk Ridge knives from Master Cutlery take over.

Something I forgot to mention about knives around the water.... I learned the hard way not to use that lovely clip that most folding knives these days come with. Of course I had to lose a really nice Al Mar folder first..... Since then my folder (a pretty good quality full sized Benchmade Ascent) stays deep in my pocket - never in my waist band or clipped to the outside of a pants pocket. It's just too easy when you're running a long distance for it to work up and out....

My work knives on the skiff stay in a rack until they're needed but I always want a one handed folder for emergencies (if you snag an anchor in a hard current or catch bottom with a castnet) - your own gear can pull you in and drown you so it's a very good idea to keep some means of cutting yourself free in an instant....

Now if I could only learn this stuff before I end up learning the hard way....

Next time on the water it's either a cheap knife or one that has a sheath- preferably both! While the lesson stung, I'm laughing about it. Pretty much because the alternative to that isn't as fun:)
