Hey Guys! I work part time at my church. I mainly do the music and some stuff with the teenagers. Outside of that I am self employed and make just barely enough to pay the bills..... most of the time. haha
There are a few kids that go there (the church) that have no dads or don't have either of their parents, and are being raised by relatives. Some of them are totally miserable becasue they come to church and get preached at.
Well... I've decided to take the approach of building relationships with some of these kids, the way Jesus did. This isn't a religious thread, but understand my process. I believe that people try to force their "absolute knowledge" on others too easily these days, and the value of relationships is cheapened. I'm out to change this. I'm hanging out with these kids, talking about what's happening in their lifes. Trying to give them an outlet for their sorrows and a forum for their celebrations and happiness. I'm introducing them to many new things they didn't know existed, and with that comes them starting to define who they are as individuals! They no longer feel like "just another kid" and start seeing that adult process of "finding yourself". We've done things like Disc Golf, Ultimate Frisbee, and just general public works and public service activities to get them aware of the things they have to offer to other people and the things they can learn from people they would have never talked to otherwise. They also have introduced friends to me that do not go to church, but want to meet me because of the relationship I have with their friends. This is great, becasue I'm able to start reaching kids outside of my church and have some impact on the community.
So. here's the scoop..... I've been proposing taking these kids shooting, and making sure it's well organized. probably only 1 or 2 kids at a time to keep things in order.
I want to teach them about .22lr's, shotguns, and things like my SKS and AR-15.
What's the big problem? Well.... 2 things:
1)wear and tear
2)ammo

I'm hoping I can find people that might have a little bit of extra ammo, or maybe some old .22's laying around that aren't really getting used, and donate them to a good cause. I have a guy locally that opened up his 75acre plot to allow me to take these kids whenever I want a few at a time.
I'm seeing some of these kids come out of their shells and get excited about life. I don't want to be held back by the fact that I can't afford to go buy a brick of .22 ammo.
I financially support my family and my father and mother, so money is tight, but my heart is big and it's changing these young lifes for the good! I'm doing my part to ensure the success of our future generations.
So with that, I urge you to PM me if you have the means to help out a little. I'm not asking for anything big! Maybe a few rounds of .223 here, and some clay pigeons there. You know. Just basic stuff.
I have not organized a shooting day for these kids yet just due to needing a few things like ammo, and a few guns that I can put aside just for the group and have available any time these kids call and want to go.
I would even like the ability to spend a good amount of time with the kid, and get his/her parents involved too for the fun of having a family sport (provided they have any family to et involved) and maybe (if the kid has shown to be responsible enough, and of a reasonable age) be able to give them a .22LR or something like that. I really am excited to do this on a small scale first, but I just need a little help.
I don't want anyone giving more than they can handle, or giving something they may regret. But I would ask that if you have anything laying around that you aren't using and don't plan on using, that you would consider contacting me and donating it to the cause.
Thanks so much guys! I hope others here are as excited to help kids get a good outlook on their futures! These kids are like little brothers and sisters to me, and I want them to grow up secure and happy, and ready to face the things that a lot of us were never prepared to face in life, simply becasue nobody took enough time to hold our hands and guide us as kids and young adults!
Down the road I may ask for help from some of you to organize a youth shooting event, but for now I just am interested in the 1 on 1 time I get with these kids. I don't want them to feel like charity cases.... I want them to have a friend that will point them in the right direction.

Thanks guys! PM me!

Just a suggestion, people tend to be more charitable when they can see what effect their money is reaping. If you set up a website dedicated to your cause, with pics of both your equipment and that which has been/will be donated to you, and photos from your outings with the kids (complete with big grins and big fun), I think you'll get a very positive response.

Great suggestion.
There are a ton of scamers these days and I can understand the hesitation to trust some random guy on a message board anyways.
I'll get some pics of the next time I take a kid or 2 out and we'll go from there. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nightwing,....check with your local Scouting and 4-H type organizations. You might be surprised at what you find can be made to happen. Both of those organizations have organized shooting programs for youth. Another source would of course be to check with some of your area sportsman's clubs and shooting ranges. They too have equipment, and the manpower to put together some great programs.

Sctp

nightwing, check with the national shooting sports foundation, (nssf) for their youth program, SCTP (scholastic clay target program). They will stear you to a group near you and if there is not one nows your chance to be a hero and start one. Most of the work is already done for you, you just have to pick up the ball and go.
