Killing Time in South Dakota

My youngest son was chosen as 1 of 10 kids from across the country to attend the DU Waterdog Daze 2007 in Victor, SD, and I will have 3 days to kill while he is at the dog training clinic. I don't relish the idea of driving 1200 miles to spend 3 days sitting in a motel and am wondering if there is anything to hunt or tourist traps in the NE corner of SD, SE corner of ND, or western Minnesota? Thanks!
 
Prairie Dogs

You should be be able to find some local farmers/ranchers who need their prairie dog populations controlled. I just spent a weekend in central SD doing this. It was pure fun. Used 22, 223 and 308. This time of year they are not as easy to get as you think. It makes for some fun hunting.
 
Not much up that way. There are some casinos on the North and south border and last time i was up there there was a radio contest from watertown that was giving a way a free case of beer. that should kill some time!!

Once upon a time, a long-long time ago, as an underage minor, I was incarcerated in Aberdeen SoDakia. I escaped in 1960 and I ain't goin' back. No, I hadn't run afoul of the law, livin' there just felt like jail time.

No prairie dogs in eastern SoDakia that I ever heard of. There is fishing; northern pike, walleyes, perch, etc. The lake country around Pickerel, Enemy Swim, and all is pretty, but I haven't seen it for decades. I imagine it's all changed now.

Dig 6 holes in the lawn & surround with garden hose, shoot pool, it's that flat in Brown County.

I grew up in eastern South Dakota and CB900F is right. There really isn't any prairie dogs on that side of the state. There are a lot of gophers, however. They can be fun as well, but there usually aren't near as many of them in one area, like there are with prairie dogs.

Just talked to my buddy and here is reply, "Don't stay long its boring as hell out that way, just tell him to drive over to Minnesota and see what he can find there."
 
Doesn't look like you are too far from Fergus Falls or Alexandria MN. Check them out, I'm sure there are some sights to see there.
 
n.e. corner of s.d.... when is the class?

you won't be far from cabela's in owatonna, mn, and mitchell, sd. world class waterfowling is available, and if you go up to marshall county, plenty of public lands.

coyotes are year-round, jacks are, too - doves may be open, and maybe early waterfowl. just depends on when you're going to be there.

watertown has a great muscle car scene, 1/4 mile brackets every weekend in marion. fantastic gun shop up in the middle of nowhere near brookings...

and no, there are no prairie dogs there, not even one, and your closest dog will be 3 hours to the west.
 
Yeah, there really isn't much to do in South Dakota, especially the NE corner. Unless you're into gambling, then you could probably find a dozen places within an hour drive...

I'm not sure which gun shop dakotasin was talking about, but there is Gengerke Tactical in Groton. I've never been there, but it's one of the very few (two, I believe) Class 3 dealers in the state. That might be reason enough to go there. :)

It might be a good idea to also bring a book or two though. ;)
