if you find a particular model from either maker that comes closest to your needs, buy that maker. both are good firearms.

ANY PRODUCTION MFGR. YOU MENTION ON THE NET WILL GET TRASHED.

if they were as bad as the nay sayers are reporting, how is it they are still in business?

I researched the same thing. Except in .45. I went with the Springfield Micro Compact.
Why? Customer service. From what I understand Kimber's customer service is less than stellar. My Springfield has been great.

I've heard nothing but good things about Springfiled. Not the case for Kimber, but I'm sure it's not a bad choice either.

I'd recommend something different - STI Trojan. Excellent 1911 mfg. I've had my 9mm Trojan for over a year without any hiccups. Used it in a pistol class with no issues. Very accurate to shoot.

i think he is looking for a compact, the Trojan is full sized, though i think STI makes the Escort in 9mm which would be a good choice, or i think they have an LS9 or something

I've heard nothing but bad things about Kimber and good things about springfield. That said, I've shot 3 different springer 1911s and 2 of them had significant problems. the first had to be sent back due to a bad finish and terrible accuracy. The other was a jam-o-matic that the owner tried everything to fix and just couldn't get the thing to work. He sold it and bought a different springer that did work. I own a Kimber eclipse and it works just fine. I've also put quite a few rounds through a smith and wesson 1911 and it worked fine too.

(emphasis added to quote)

Everyone seems to have "heard" bad things about Kimber does anyone really have first hand proof? I own both Springfield and Kimber yes I am a proponent for Kimber as I have owned 2 and have never had a problem. So that being said what is the problem with current production Kimbers?

Geesh, I just read this thread and good luck with your choice. Sounds like examples of BOTH guns have either been perfect or riddled with problems. Perhaps it will come down to a matter of ergonomics, availability, and or personal preference?

Go with the Springer. All pistols have occasional issues which is why it's important that you purchase one from a company that stands behind it's product. SA provides a lifetime warranty and some of the best customer service in the business. That can't be said about Kimber.

I will say it is toss up and comes down to the individual. I like both companies and have not had a problem with either to date. I think the purpose of the pistol and the options I would want would decide which one I buy.
