I agree with your face 2 face at texas knife makers, i stopped by there the last time I was in houston,
and was not impressed
They got a lot more personalitie at jantez in davis, ok.
Man if you ground that double edge for your third knife, watch out loveless, randell, ect

No, those were off the shelf blades. I wish I ground those.

I have one I'm working on grinding the bevel now, but there is no way I'd show it, lol.

I will use Texas Knife for now. I've been stopping in there on Saturday mornings, and talking with the owner Jim. Starting to build a relationship with them, and getting better service.

I started my first grind this weekend. It's rough, but I'm happy with the progress. I thought it would be much worse. I can see myself making more.

I'm planning on a grinder build in the near future, a 2"x72".

Wow. Thx.

One thing I learned is to drill the pin holes before you grind.

I assume i hardened it done with heat cycling, I couldn't get a bit through it for the second hole

I meant I was getting it pretty hot while grinding the bevel. I tried to dip it each pass to control the heating, but I guess I hardened it a bit, lol.

No idea what speed the drill press is running at though...

But the metal twists coming off the drill bit were bright blue....

You don't have to worry about heat when doing your primary grind since there isn't any heat treatment to spoil, just keep it cool enough to hang on to.

Check it. It makes a world of difference, especially when you start drilling a dozen holes per knife. ;)

knife definitely gets too hot to touch. I wear mechanix gloves and it gets hot. I need to do a better job at keeping it cooler for sure. But I will also slow down the drill.

I got 440 for $9.95 a foot at TX Knife. Don't know if that's s good deal or not.

But like I said, I'm trying to build a relationship with the local guys.

That's 1.5" wide, eighth inch bar

bodam,

You shouldn't wear gloves when grinding. That way you can feel when the steel is getting too warm. ALSO, it is very unsafe to wear gloves around a grinder if you're holding a blade. Look up bench or pedestal grinder injuries.

It's not safe at all to wear gloves around a grinder of any sort.
A belt sander, using a course grit for initial grinds has less tendency to heat up the steel and a can of water at hand is a help.
