Knife steel?

I'm the same way. I'm sure I could build one, but I know nothing about how they are set up, etc. And I'm sure setting up the proper tracking, etc would suck.

I'd rather build knives, lol.

I'm not knocking the grizzly, but I believe the Coote offers a lot more options without costing a fortune. I believe the grizzly is still a direct drive making it a difficult/expensive option to have speed adjustments. The price has gone up since I bought my coote but I still think its a good value. the 3 speed step pulleys are very simple to set up and really give you all the adjustment you will ever need. High speed for hogging, medium for finish grinding, slow for sharpening or handle work.
If you plan to do hollow grinds, the 10 inch wheel is a nice upgrade. If you want to flat grind only the 8" should serve you well.

The KMG is a cadillac. I was on bladeforums when Rob Frink was developing it and it really has a lot of thought behind it. Amazing machine for knife making or fab work, but it comes at a price. Its a big investment if you aren't planning to go into business.

I started on the Grizzly grinder and it was ok but it has one speed and that is FULL speed. :) Then I found a Bader B3 for $1800 and bought it. Sold it for $2k but I had bought some wheels and a small wheel attachment for it. That small wheel attachment is highly recommended if you ever get a 2x72 grinder.

I got the small wheel attachment and your right it is a dream. A million times better than a dremel.

bodam, I cannot afford to buy knife making equipment for my hobby, so I make whatever I need. So far, I have made 3 forges, a 75 pound 10”stroke air hammer, a hot steel rolling mill and a 2x72” belt sander, The sander cost me about $250 8 years ago without the motor. If you have a chop saw, welder, drill, hand grinder and can weld, you can build one. If you don’t have a welder, then you can drill tap and bolt it together. I prefer to weld it together. It is much faster and there’s nothing to loosen up. :banghead:
