Bought an enhanced Colt Commander yrs ago (with a factory trigger close to 2#). Wilson guiderod, Hogue slabs, Pachmayr arched MS housing. Thing chews the X out at 50 ft with boring regularity.

Even a few Colt hating buds said they'd buy that pig if I ever turned it loose.

Nope.

It's going away for a Bomar rear.

Pop's got a GC, stainless...........had nothing but problems with it. Just never know. His old blued one shot great.

He slapped together ;) an Essex frame, GI slide w Bomar rib, Barsto bbl (IIRC)........... many yrs ago. That thing really shoots.

It all depends how much you want to spend. Entry level, mid price or premium? For entry to mid level, I would look at Colt, Dan Wesson, Springfield, and STI.

Stock Springfield @ 50 yards. Finding the right load is sometimes harder than finding the right pistol. A lot of gun makers claim small groups but too many folks think you can just get it to do that easily when you want it to. That is not usually the case....

That's a tough question that I don't think the OP gave enough details to answer properly. Is he looking for a full size gun, a commander, CCO pattern, Officer's, etc? Fixed or adjustable sights, any preference as to whether or not there's a firing pin block type of safety a la Series 80/Series 90 or Swartz. That said, assuming a full size gun my recommendations would be:

Won't break the bank - Springfield Range Officer, these have adjustable sights, no firing pin block safety, and are about as bare bones as you're going to get an SA 1911. These typically live in the $7-800.00 range. Not bad for a quality 1911 with a forged steel frame and slide.

Mid price point - Springfield TRP, Dan Wesson Valor, Kimber Warrior/Desert Warrior/Warrior SOC. An honorable mention would also go to the Colt Series 70 re-issue. Expect to come in between $1000-$1500 if you're looking at these

Entry level custom guns - Les Baer Premier II if you fancy some adjustable sights or Baer Custom Carry or Baer Concept II. Any of these will get you for about $2,000.00 +/- a couple hundred depending on where you get it from.

Typical custom guns - Wilson Combat, period, end of story. If they're not your thing, there's also Ed Brown, Nighthawk Custom, Volkmann Precision, Rogers Precision, etc. These all come at a price though, expect to spend upward of $3,000 for these.

If you need to be a little more cost conscious, I'd recommend looking for a used Springfield Mil-Spec. Also worth a look if forged slide and frame are not high on the priority list are the Remington 1911 R1 series pistols.

My stainless Springfield Mil-Spec was dead-nuts accurate right out of the box, with Federal aluminum, if I do my part. I can't imagine how sending it to a custom shop would enhance it's accuracy one iota, from what I'm seeing.
I'm REAL happy with this thing.

Depends on your definition for accurate at X yards and price range. In the $800+ range, the Sig 1911 I felt was a good buy. This was a 10 yard 8 shot grouping with 230 gr ball from Magtech.
