I've seen some threads on Dan Wesson 1911s and they look pretty good. Does anyone know if they will be approved for sale in CA? They are not listed on the approved CA firearms list. Also, does anyone have any comments on DW customer service?

Yes, it would seem they have alot of practice at the customer service thing. :uhoh:

I have personal experience with three Dan Wesson 1911s.

Two Pointman Minors and one Major.

The two Pointman Minors were bought for about $475 and the Major was about $650.

The Minors were both very good pistols out of the box. One had a perfect creep free trigger and it fed anything we tried in it.

The other had just a bit of creep in the trigger and it had a problem on the first two mags then after that it has been reliable.

The Major was stainless and had adjustable sights. It was one of the nicest out of the box 1911s I have seen in a long time.

Everything was as close to perfect as some custom guns. The lock up was perfect and the slide was tight but not too tight.

The trigger was one of the best I have ever seen on a factory 1911 and it also fed everything we put in it.

They all three shoot very well.

I did a trigger job on the Minor that had a little creep. The internals parts seems to be very high quality and everything was machined as well as the average high dollar 1911.

I don't know if ALL their 1911s are as good as the three I have experience with.

I would buy one if I needed another 1911. From my experience the $475 Minor is the best 1911 for the money I have ever seen.

I've shot a few Patriots and a Pointman, all have been reliable, acccurate and priced right. I don't think you'll wrong if you decide to purchase one.

Thanks for the excellent feedback. I might contact DW directly to see if they plan to have their products approved for sale in CA.

Dan Wesson's service is top-notch!

I don't know if they will soon be certifying their pistols for sale in the PRK, but Bob Serva is somewhat recalcitrant on this point. Bob's strong Christian standpoint, as well as his staunch protection of the second amendment to the Bill of Rights, makes him resitant to the call for "bowing to the socialist powers" that hold sway in the Golden State.

Take that for what its worth,

Scott

^^^^

Yeah that, and they seem to have their hands full right now getting and keeping the other 49 states supplied, let alone asking for more in Cali.

Although I thought there was a post over on the 1911 forum that said DW's were going to be submitted for Massachusetts approval. Unfortunately I can't check that right now as the 1911 forum is down for the weekend. If Mass. can be done then Cali shouldn't be too hard.

I have a Dave Pruitt model and this is the tighest shooting gun I own and I have two Kimbers and numerous other pistols. I shoot and it goes right there. The Pruitt model has a ramped barrel and I did have some feeding problems at first but they were taken care of by DW. Cost I pais was $650.00.

I've got a Dan Wesson PM7-S that's nicer in every way than my stainless Kimber Pro Carry II and fit and finish wise is as nice as my series I Kimber Pro CDP.

It was only $549, which is about $150 less than the Pro Carry II and about half the price of the CDP.

I have been very impressed with a Pointman Major . I got a PM1B-FS for $499 and find it to be a good value . Have not needed customer service but representatives are on the 1911 DW forum and are very active in answering questions.

Me too

I have a Razorback that has been flawless..

It's tight, smooth and accurate..

I am plumb tickled with my DW..

I have a Pointman Major in 10mm, and it is a fantastic gun. It is absolutely the most accurate pistol that I have ever fired. The fit, and finish are second to none. And, it feeds every type of hollow point ammunition that I can throw at it 100% reliably.
To the best of my knowlege....You can't get one in CA, but if you ever get the opportunity to own one....Get it! I can't say enough good things about my Dan Wesson.:D

See? Cornbread2 and I agree on this subject (and probably most others out there).

My Dan Wesson Razorback has been great. It had a couple of issues with the sights at first which DW took care of post haste. While the pistol was gone, I asked for a bit more throating which they did happily for free. The pistol was back to me in 7 days and has been absolutely bulletproof since. Perfect reliability, solid construction, excellent accuracy. :)

Good guns. Excellent value. :)

I have a DW Bobtail Commander coming in within the next couple of days. I'll let you guys know what I think then. :)

What about the problems they were having with loose firing pin stops on the adjustable sight models? How big of a problem was it anyway? Was it just a few examples or a lot of them? Has it been fixed or should we just get one with fixed sights?

Should change that to problem. I remember that thread as I started it after a report on the S&W forum. The person who posted the original report never did return to say what finally happened.

While it seems that a majority of the guns have loose FPS's as reported in that thread it has only resulted in one reported problem in a competition gun, which was an AD. And even then the AD was the result of the operator inserting a cartridge into the barrel by hand after the gun jammed with the cartridge base up against the FP and he didn't notice the extended FP.

No, it isn't 100% right. Another FP stop should be fitted if needed. I'm sure DW will fix it if asked (I haven't). Since it took a comparitively unique set of circumstances (FP stop rides UP and you hand install a cartridge) to get the AD I'm not going to worry about it overmuch.

As for sights I used to demand adjustables, and perhaps with the 10mm it is a good idea with the wide range of cartridge power and bullet weights, but I've come to appreciate the fixed sights for anything else.

Thanks for clearing that up. Guess I might be getting a Patriot one of these days :)

Unitman,

Give Dan Wesson a call and see what their plans are. When I lived in the PRK I wanted a CZ75 in Nickel. Not on the list. I called CZ and they told me that CA could shove it and they were not sending them a Nickel one. It usually takes 3 to 4 months for things sent to the labs to get turned around. They may have sent it already or they don't intend to like CZ dercided about a number of their products. Good luck!

Razorback

I have a DW Razorback, (in 10mm Auto, of course) that shoots tremendously well! This autoloader is an excellent excample of the pistolsmith's craft. You cannot go wrong with Bob Serva and his crew!

Bob is not only a great handgun manufacturer, but an excellent Christian as well! Bob stands behind his products better than most of the "big boys." Bob can "watch my back" in a gunfight anytime!

If you purchase a Dan Wesson product you will never regret it! If something goes wrong, Bob will make it right! You can bet the house on that! :) :D

To 9x19 and ddj8052,

A pet peeve of mine but why are you afraid (or too lazy) to put the state or country you live in in your profile?

Do you fear the thought police knocking down your door?

This makes a difference in how people respond to your posts. Take it or leave it as you will :scrutiny:

>>Dan Wesson Stainless Patriot Expert is absolutely the finest 1911 style weapon I have ever owned or shot, and that is quite a few.<<

I have the same one, and it's a whole lot of gun for the money!!
