Phantom,
Lets put it this way. For legal reasons which I will not get into, my primary gun is an 870 with #4 followed by #00. With a 3rd extension it has more than enough capacity for 99.999% of HD scenarios. I have every confidence in these rounds, along with slugs from a 12ga. I do not feel that I would be better served for HD with an AR (and would feel no worse if I was using an AR). However, the edge a shotgun has in hit probability is minimal at HD distance where the shot does not have a chance to spread.
The only reason I got into this thread was just to submitt the idea that the reason you do not yet see a Sidewinder in every patrol car is not because there is any thing wrong with it, but instead due administrators concerns over price and shotguns in general. A prolonged North Hollywood style shoot out in which the cops are shooting buck gives that many more chances for fliers. If you have cops unloading 10 rd mags of buck one after another at across the street distances, well you do the math, especially since most of the local PD I am aware of do not recieve adequate shotgun training.
