Knoxx sidewinder

Phantom,

Lets put it this way. For legal reasons which I will not get into, my primary gun is an 870 with #4 followed by #00. With a 3rd extension it has more than enough capacity for 99.999% of HD scenarios. I have every confidence in these rounds, along with slugs from a 12ga. I do not feel that I would be better served for HD with an AR (and would feel no worse if I was using an AR). However, the edge a shotgun has in hit probability is minimal at HD distance where the shot does not have a chance to spread.

The only reason I got into this thread was just to submitt the idea that the reason you do not yet see a Sidewinder in every patrol car is not because there is any thing wrong with it, but instead due administrators concerns over price and shotguns in general. A prolonged North Hollywood style shoot out in which the cops are shooting buck gives that many more chances for fliers. If you have cops unloading 10 rd mags of buck one after another at across the street distances, well you do the math, especially since most of the local PD I am aware of do not recieve adequate shotgun training.

CaCrusin, if you guys really get a 10rd double stack box mag for that I might just have to break down a buy a Mossberg to put it on. I always thought that drum looked ridiculous, but if you could find a way to stuff, say 15 to 20 rounds in it that would be another story altogether. How about it? High caps are legal for most of now, you know you want too....

Well...

I'm seriously considering this setup, even though it'll cost more than the gun I'll put it on...

Because, I like the patterns I get with S&B 3" Magnum, 15 pellet 00buck out of my 20" mossberg...but using the 3" shells reduces the capacity by one...

Now we're talking 10 rounds of 15 pellet buck (150 .32 caliber projectiles!)...And 10 more MUCH quicker than I can stuff shells into the thing...

Is it likely that I'll ever NEED 10 rounds...NO...But JUST IN CASE....

If I recall correctly, rotating drum shotguns were used by security professionals; in South Africa during the last years of apartide (sp?).

The Striker 12 and the later Protecta (http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/SH09-E.HTM) are 12 gage drum magazine shotguns developed in South Africa for situations where a few LEOs/soldiers/guards found them selves in the mist of a large group of possibly hostile people, most of whom did not have firearms. These were riots, demonstrations, mobs or marches, depending on your point of view (not trying to start a political argument here!) The security pros would either have to or were ordered to (again depending on your point of view) disperse the crowd quickly (also encourage them not to form a crowd again) and found large clouds of shot fired quickly was the most effective means, even more so then automatic rifle or sub-machine gun fire. Other large capacity shotguns were developed at the same time, using magazines other then a rotating drum (MAG-7, http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh20-e.htm, and Neostead shotguns, http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh08-e.htm)

With the coming of universal voting rights, I understand the situation in South Africa has changed; still one of the most violent and crime ridden counties, but most people do not see their government as oppressors, and look to the security forces to protect them from criminal gangs. So I’m guessing the need for Striker type shotguns there has decreased (perhaps someone who has been there can confirm or correct?)

I’m also thinking a situation requiring 10 round shotguns is not likely to arise in the USA (police and correction officers here have shown themselves capable of dispersing riots effectively with standard 4 to 6 round police shotguns.) Unless you are the type of guy who makes large groups of people really angry at you.

Many great arguments, and I don't have any need for one. But, it's So. Damn. Cool. :D And I'm not a "tactical" guy, so it would have to go with the wood furniture on my 500.

I noticed on the Knoxx website that the SideWinder works only on certain types of Mossbergs. Does anyone know if they will work with the Mariner?

What does it fit?

The Sidewinder will fit all Mossberg 500, 590, 600 variants and all Maverick 88 models that have dual action bars. Adapters may be required for certain models or barrel lengths ($19.95). The Mariner is a 500 model with an electroless nickle finish. It will fit on a Mariner.

BTW, I hope that you all had the oppportunity to read Correia's article in SWAT Magazine. It was a great article and we appreciate the good press.

Sidewinder sales have been steady and many LE agencies are installing them on their less lethal shotguns where the high capacity and quick reloads is truly a benefit on a day-to-day basis. Many shooters are using the kits on competition guns and doing very well. They have a good following in correctional institutions as well. Then there are the guys who love the look and just want something awesome. 10-round double stack magazines will be available by June.

Happy New Year!

"BTW, I hope that you all had the oppportunity to read Correia's article in SWAT Magazine."

Nope. Sorry. Will the SideWinder be difficult to install on a Mariner?

I just can't fathom why I'd need a ten round drum mag for my shotgun. My mossberg 500 already holds 8+1, and I 9 rounds of 00 buck hasn't removed the threat, I'm in deep doodoo.

The point of the Sidewinder is that if you have a spare drum already loaded, you can reload all of your shells at once instead of the one shell at a time.

"If 9 rounds of 00 buck hasn't removed the threat, I'm in deep doodoo."

That's fine if your trying to kill a copperhead on your porch, but what if one day there is another riot like the one in Watt's? A quick 10 round reload would be mighty pleasant to have then.

need some advice

So I'm going to get a shotgun soon. Been looking around and found the Knoxx sidewinder on the web. This looks like something I might be interested in, but I have a few questions.

#1. As I understand it, this would make my shotgun invaild for hunting in CA, right? Great for home defense, but as I can only afford one shotgun at this time, I would rather keep this gun more general purpose.

#2. I was considering getting a shotgun capable of firing 3.5" rounds, but the sidewinder only works with 2.75 and 3" shells, right?

Any sugestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know about the magazine, but I think that your state of residence kinda dictates what you can have. That said, I'd like to have one, but seem to have gotten by without any special "needs" for my shotguns for 3 decades. God I'm getting to be the "Old guy" I used to mention in conversation. "That OLDER dude keeps getting all the hot chicks "round here":barf: heheehe

I have a few 3.5" 12ga shotguns and haven't really found a use for them ~yet. Beretta Xtrema (1), browning BPS & Gold, and the most loathed shotgun I've ever bought- an SBE. All of those are EXCELLENT shotguns- but in reality I like the browning gold lite 10ga for any chores those guns have to reach to achieve, my 686 only holds 2 shells and it works fine in the field;and my "regular" 1200fp holds plenty of shells for H.D. use. I dunno. I'm wanting a saiga .410 right now; but have put it off before.

#1. There are no laws in California that would restrict the use of a Sidewinder-equiped shotgun for hunting, other than the Federal Migratory Bird Act that is nation-wide. You would need to block the magazine (6-rnd box) to two rounds to hunt birds. Otherwise it is completely legal in California for any legal purpose.

#2. You are correct on this point. We didn't think that there would be much demand for the 3.5 " shells.

The ability for reload your weapon is fundamental. Every other weapon system has a rapid reload process except the shotgun. All military weapons are magazine or belt fed except the shotgun. The Sidewinder simply updates the shotgun to modern systems design and increases the effectiveness and speed. Many people have problems with change and find new ideas hard to grasp. Change will hppen because there are enough people willing to try new things.

I have one for my mossy 500 and i love it to death. i had some problems initailly to install it but once on i really liked it. if you do get it make sure you get m14 mag pouches they fit the 6 rd mags nicely. i really like the grip on the slide too it make it easier to rack for me. if you have the money to blow go for it.
