Thanks to Ala Dan for starting the thread on Kubatons!

A related question:

My friend -- a recently retired LEO -- will soon be moving to Florida. For years he has had a 5 to 6 inch plastic Kubaton (a freebee from a police supply store) attached to his house/car key ring.

Would it be okay from him to continue to carry a Kubaton on his key ring when he moves to Florida BEFORE he obtains his Florida weapons permit?

In other words, in Florida, do you need a weapons permit to carry a Kubaton?

 :what:

Thanks...

not sure on their legality totally but i do know you can buy them at any gun store or flea market here and i used to have one on my keyring until it got to be too bulky for the pocket.

I looked through Gutmacher's book, Florida Firearms - Law, Use, & Ownership (buy your friend a copy!), which seems to be pretty much the definitive text for Florida weapons laws. I couldn't find anything about kubotans. I doubt your friend would ever have a problem, though, unless he pissed somebody off that decided to make something of it. (I'd note that a small Maglite makes a great little kubotan, and no one would ever have an issue with one in your pocket.)

HOWEVER, you might advise your friend that almost any non-firearm weapon may be carried OPENLY in Florida (I love this state), so he could always just let the kubotan hang outside his pocket and he'd be perfectly legal. And if he'd like to supplement that little stick with a Bowie knife, a broadsword, and a crossbow all carried openly, it would be perfect legal.

DISCLAIMER - I am not a lawyer, I don't play one on television, I don't even know anyone who claims to be related to a lawyer. Consequently, this ain't legal advice.

Didn't think anyone would even regulate the kubaton. 1/2" dowel rod that's 6" long will do the same trick.

I believe they are OK....

I lived there ten years and I knew a lady that carried one constantly. I carried the minimag(even on aircraft...do not know about now...but it is still a just a flashlight right?)...hey, a flashlight is a handy thing!! Yarawa/kubotan/light all in one!!!
And in Florida...well, there is alot that is legal!! Automatic knives. Statute 690 or was it 790(?), allowed you to carry a loaded handgun in the car without special permit...had to be in a holster, bag, fanny pack. It is a class three state too!
CCW are easy to get and Florida was amongst the first, if not THE first to start the Shall Issue craze...that has reached Missouri finally...Congrats to the ShowMe(ers).
And pretty beaches to boot....nice place...I miss it!!(what I did not say 'Thong's' anywhere! Wow.....I must be slipping.) LOL
