I just moved to Lafayette and I need to find a good gun shop and a good range. If anyone in town wants to tell me where they go I would sure appreciate it. Thanks

Is that near Purdue? I think they have a rifle club an range nearby...saw it on CMP.com...they had a listing of gun clubs to join to become a CMP member, lots in Indiana...I'm farther north an east of you...thats the best I can help...good luck.

I live in Missouri now.. but while I was a student at Purdue, I never found a range within 30 miles that was affordable. There was an indoor place that we tried once, over near the mall, it cost us 40 bucks each just to shoot for a couple of hours.

I was an Ag student, so we had plenty of land that local farmers allowed us to shoot on.

I can help you with the gun shop though.

A guy named Les has a shop called Lafayette Guns and Gear. Pretty good selection of pistols, rifles, holsters, and carry belts. He carries police supplies as well.

I bought 4 or 5 guns from him, and had him do a couple of FFL transfers as well. It has been a few years since I have been to his shop, but his prices were always fair.

He is also over near the mall, though more close to the rural king.

If memory serves me, his shop is on Glick street.

Do a google search for Lafayette Guns and Gear and it should pull up his address.

I do all my transfers and whatnot through Stan at Applied Ballistics on Union street in Lafayette. Les over at Guns and Gear (can't remember the street) in Lafayette is good, too.

There's an indoor range in town called Flat Creek, I would avoid it like the plague. Not a good place. Right near town there is a very nice range called Wildcat Valley. Its about $300 a year, plus a certain number of hours of service time at the range per year, plus a referral from a current member, I think. They have ranges out to 300 yards, and a falling steel course, I believe. This is the only place nearby you can shoot full auto. I've never been there.

I do most of my shooting at the Linden Conservation Club, about fifteen minutes out of town on 231. 50ft and 25 yard pistol ranges, 50 and 100 yard pistol/rifle ranges, and a nice trap setup. Its open to the public on weekends, but a $50 a year will get you a key that lets you in any day of the week. Memberships can be purchased at either gun shop I mentioned.

Another range option is the Jasper/Pulaski State Park range, about an hour away from town on 43. Open to the public, they have 25, 50, 100, and 225 yard ranges, plus a field you can shoot clays in if you bring your own thrower. Lots of lane space, but lots of typical yahoos you get at public ranges. Still a decent place to go if you don't mind the drive.

I never ran across Applied Ballistics while I lived there.

Is that a relatively new place or did I just fail to sniff them out?

If any Boilermakers are native to Missouri or if you wind up in the neighborhood of Mizzou someday... make sure to send me a PM. I am a member at the club that hosts the Bianchi Cup.

If you want the drive, you can come up to Bass & Bucks, in Wabash, IN...big outdoor range with 25yds all the way out to 750 yds. Was there 2 weeks ago an it was $15.00 for the day...

I created this google map with all of the locations in this thread so far.

Locations in this thread
Key: green & blue - recommended sites, red - unrecommended, dotted - places I've been personally.

Lafayette Guns and Gear is a pretty nice place. My friends and I have purchased several pistols through there, as well as transferred a few firearms. The prices are very reasonable and the proprietor is a friendly guy.

I found Applied Ballistics, but they aren't open during a convenient time for me, something like 2-6pm M-F so I've never been in the shop. It's a small place off 52.

I've been to another shop called Sallee's Gun Shop off 231 by Menards. I transferred a shotgun through there, and the owner seems nice enough, but it's very obvious that the gun shop is not the primary business there. Very limited selection of anything. I'd rather drive across town to Guns & Gear.

I've heard mixed things about flat creek range though I've never been there myself. I have a friend who shoots pistol there regularly and speaks well of it.

I do most of my shooting at linden conservation club as well, though I am not a member.

Another option, albeit a more expensive one is the Wildcat Valley Rifle and Pistol Club. It's a very nice range, though. I used to shoot high power matches there when I was a student and it's maybe a 25min drive from Purdue. It's pretty close to Brookston.

Membership is required to shoot there most days, but as I recall it's open 10-4 for the public on Sundays for $10. Membership is pretty expensive if I remember but the guys there are a good bunch.

Avoid Flat Rock (just off Concord on Olympia) if you can like The Irishman said. If for no other reason, you can shoot better outdoor ranges for much less.

If you want more info on Wildcat, PM THR member El Tejon. Last I knew, he was a member.

argentum is right, Applied Ballistics is open 2pm-6pm on business days, the owner spends the mornings running his sign shop that's housed in the same building. After lunch he just walks across the hall and opens the guns shop. It is a very small place, only half a dozen or so long guns, half a dozen or so pistols, and half a dozen or so suppressors in stock. He's a good guy, and the only source in town for Ballistol, so I'd recommend him.

I had forgotten about the bizarre little lawn care and guns shop that argentum mentioned. I haven't been there myself, but I've heard its a good place to get ammo during the present shortage, since no one expects there to be a gun shop in there.

And I'll just reiterate mine and PurdueRifleman's points - avoid Flat Creek. It is expensive, but I wouldn't shoot there if it was free. Others opinions may vary.

I buy guns from Les at Lafayette Guns and Gear and Tippecanoe Sport Shop (mostly I drop off guns for Gunsmith Stu to work on).

Tippecanoe Sport Shop: http://tippysportshop.com/

I have purchased several Title I and II items from Stan Mitchell at Applied Ballistics.

I did buy a few guns at Sportsman's Warehouse, but it will be gone in May.

There is a new place on North Earl near my house (I live off Union Street on the North End) called "Ace" or something like that. It's near Haley's Locksmithing.

The Lafayette gun shows are smaller (duh), but I still go. Last summer I got a bunch full of 7.62x39 at less than .10 a round and most of it was tracer.

Going to the Indy 1500? Plenty of guns to buy there.:D

Not going to the Indy 1500, I found out about it Friday when I tried going to Applied Ballistics but the sign on the door said they were closed because the owner went.

I stopped by Guns and Gear the other day and liked what I saw. They were all very friendly and helpful but were having trouble keeping the shelves stocked.

I also went to Sallee's Sport Shop, they had more there than what I was expecting to find. They did have ammo on hand but it was a little on the expensive side.

On my to do list is Applied Ballistics, Tippecanoe Sport Shop, and Linden Conservation Club.

El Tejon, are you a member at Wildcat Valley? I think I'm leaning towards Linden Conservation Club but if Wildcat is worth it I'll check it out. Thanks again everyone.

Update to info

I know this is an old thread but here's some new info.

Stan from Applied Ballistics has moved his shop to the old Flat Creek location. He has completely rebuilt the ventilation system as it was installed incorrectly by the previous owner and contractor. The range is now very nice to shoot on, not like before. Stan is a good friend of mine and really does know his stuff. He's a shooter's shooter so he'll help you all he can.

Wildcat Valley Rifle and Pistol Club is the best shooting range in Indiana, bar none. The membership is about $100/year, maybe slightly higher now, but is completely worth it. I was a member before I moved to Arizona.

Linden Conservation Club is another good range, getting better all the time, but doesn't quiet have the facilities, ranges, of Wildcat.

I also know Stu, the gunsmith, well and he is good at what he does. I'm not sure about where he's working now as I haven't talked to him since I moved away.

Happy shooting!
