I have run into a bunch of Lake City 62 Match 30-06 brass. It still has the primer in it but it doesn't look quite like brass. Is it re-loadable? Is there a market for it? I want to sell it for a reasonable price but I don't know what that would be. What do you guys think?

As far as I know all Lake city brass is reloadable. On a good note, LC match brass does not have a crimped primer pocket which is a plus IMO.

It is most excellent brass.

I don't know what it sells for anymore either, because you don't see it for sale all that often.

But it is for sure very reloadable, and very good brass.

It isn't brassy brass. It looks to have a high copper content to it. It is darned sturdy too. I've got at least a 3 gallon bucket of it. There is over 40 pounds of it.

I have a large amount of 62, 64, 74 and a few 43:eek: LC and LC Match cases. For the life of me I can't remember what I paid!

I'm learning more by the minute. It seems like there will be about 10% in the bucket that is various other headstamps and 10% will be NM. About 80% of the remaining will be 62 match but there is also some 61 and some 63. My guess is the 61, if it was loaded, would be a collectors item?
Would you guys be kind enough to give me your assessment of these two photos please? Some of this brass is really scuffed looking. It is very straight but kind of etched looking. It looks like it was made this way. I'd shoot it in my rifles but I just want to know if this is acceptable amongst the LC Match aficionados.
Also, I have to assume the ejector marks are normal for these rounds once fired?

LOL. plmitch. With shipping the scrap rate is better than that. Anyway, I may just buy it from my friend and buy the rifle I've considered buying time and again.

A little history: In 1961 the army was in the process of moving M72 Match production from Frankford Arsenal to Lake City Arsenal. Both headstamps can be found for that year, but beginning in 1962 M72 was only made at Lake City until production ended in the late 60's. I've got thousands of '62 M72 Match brass that I bought for $10 per hundred. It's good brass, but nowhere's near the quality of Lapua.

Good info on .30-06 NM ammo:

http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2010/04/history-us-national-match-ammunition.html

My guess is the surface pitted and coloring's mostly the result of the environment those cases were kept in. Having seen all sorts of 30 caliber MATCH and NM stuff from the 1960's, when new the appearance was all the same across all years. Only the headstamp differed. And some of it never shot all that accurate in civilian bolt guns; M1 bolt faces were never squared up. Fired cases from them had quite out-of-square case heads; a known cause of poor accuracy. New cases with fairly square case heads shot very accurate in match grade Garands as well as bolt guns.

While some folks think arsenal 30 caliber match ammo cases are the cat's pajamas, most of them were not as good as Winchester or Western Cartridge Company match ammo brass or even regular commercial production cases. Federal Cartridge Company's made .30-06 brass that's more uniform than arsenal match brass. Arsenal's marked match ammo as such as it was much more accurate than regular service ammo.

I have what I hope will be the last questions for anybody in-the-know about this brass.
Did they use nickle primers in this Match ammo?
and
See the little ding at the bolt face? Is this from the extractor or what and is it an issue?

Thanks again for the help.

OK. Thank you. The ones with copper still have the red sealant in them Looks like I have a mix of once and twice fired brass. I'll be sorting for a week.

That cut on the edge probably happened as the empty case bounced off the op rod hump. Often happens with new ejector springs and with ammo having too high a port pressure. I've seen that happen before. Doesn't look like to me, the ejector would make that shape of a cut on the case rim.

LC 62 is good brass. I ran a primer test and then shot the stuff in competition. It shoots well.
