Doing a search on the subforum, Non-Firearm Weapons pulls up many threads/posts mentioning a lanyard.. but nothing that really shows some ideas.

What about lanyards? what is your favorite material? Leather? Paracord? simple or complex? Material through the handle or split ring?

any pictures would be great! Just looking for designs, ideas and neat stuff..

I don't use 'em even though I've seen some leather ones I really like with homemade micarta beads. I always put lanyard holes on my knives, so I could hand 'em on a nail on the wall for whatever stage of finish they were in. :)

Ive always like the look of a lanyard on a knife.........but ive always hated using a knife with a lanyard on it....

every time ive added a lanyard on anything, i have always taken it off withing a week of use.

I've got a couple of clip knives that have lanyard holes, I've got where I take the clips off the knives so they don't rub the console or the door in our car, or rip the armrest of the recliner again.. :uhoh:

for the most part, I guess it would be easier to grab a lanyard hanging out of the pocket.. but then I remember when I had just a simple leather thong on my skinning knife and how cruddy it got skinning and cleaning deer.

Wished I could tie some of them knots I've seen on youtube and such..

My Terzuola is one such knife that would benefit from a nice lanyard.. LOL

I can't stand not having lanyards - fixed or folder.

I can hook it out with a single finger or tuck it in to avoid hooking.
Hold the knife in my teeth by the lanyard.
Hang it on any one-sumpin.

Oh yeah - paracord primarily though I used to really like using GI boot laces too.

I like paracord. My daughter makes them for me. She makes a short flat braid with a long loop. She uses the same braid that she uses for her bracelets. I don't care for the square lanyards.

I use orange for work knives and flashlights. Easier to see. Black for EDC knives.

Even with if i use a clip, i prefer pulling the knife using the lanyard. The lanyard is easier to grab.

I prefer small unobtrusive lanyards , at one point I did like the larger square or round sinnett laynards , I find a smaller one is just the right size.

one of the Case brand lanyards I put on my John Lloyd trapper:

I have a hot pink/orange climbing accessory line lanyard with an acorn braid on the end that allows me to easily hook and draw my favorite knife. I find some knives or other tools do well with a bit of cordage on them and others don't.

My favorite is the Stansport "utility cord"- basically a 3/16" tubular flat braid nylon- that most outdoor stores sell pretty cheap (see http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/...s-Rope-and-Tie-Downs/prod9999001100/cat100936). Comes in white, OD and orange- I like orange because it makes it harder to lose stuff. A barrel swivel from the fishing tackle aisle is nice on Swiss Army knives with a built in split ring, otherwise I use a cow hitch because that makes it easy to take off if you're doing a messy job. It also knots well. A diamond knot/knife lanyard knot (http://www.animatedknots.com/lanyard/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com) looks good and is easy to tie once you get the hang of it.

There are two types of lanyards I like.

I like a short paracord lanyard to attach to the ends of knives carried in my pocket, to aid in extraction. I just hang the lanyard so it dangles slightly from my pocket.

The other lanyard I favor is braided paracord, about 24" or so in length, usually with a light at one end, and a heavy carabiner at the other. Gives versatility for a lot of things, including striking at a distance, and trapping...or just clipping the light onto things for hands-free illumination. :)

I'm a great fan of lanyards. They have saved the loss of several knives and one handgun. As to the materials used, I use either paracord, or leather. Paracord is cheaper and easier to attach, but leather has a much better "feel".

I've seen some pretty fancy paracord lanyard weavings/tieing, and a few really interestingly braided leather lanyards. I pretty much just go for a hunk of either well secured to the item.

Flashlight - sometimes (good for armed movement in structures as I recently outlined in S&T)

Knives - usually no (got one on my Ladybug; it works well on small knives but normal sized well designed knives really don't need them IMO)

Gun - absolutely not unless for maritime use

I make lanyards out of paracord....man I wish my camera was working.....I have made some simple ones like a snake knot, a bar weave, an "unloaded" monkey fist (standard monkey fist out of cord), loaded monkey fist (a monkey fist with a marble, a ball bearing, hell even a golf ball as a core) I do all kinds of lanyards and stuff useing Mil-Spec 550 Paracord

I have used some leather and a few zipper pulls from an old backpack/fannypack

I tend to use them on knives I carry in a belt pouch. I tie my own, mostly out of paracord, and decorate them with a variety of objects. This AG Russell get carried very often and the "bead" on the end is actually a encapsulated tritium vial...makes it very easy to find if dropped in the dark.
