Lapua in 7.62x39?

Lapua takes Large Rifle primers in 7.62X39. I have Rem, Win, Lapua, K P, and IMI. The only one that takes the small rifle primer is Rem.

Well, poo. :(

I really prefer the small primer, but I'm flat out running short on Remington and can't find any reasonable source for it. Lapua was my last hope..... Thanks for the heads-up, anyway - you probably just saved me a little coin and a lot of heartache.

Has anyone noticed any practical accuracy difference between the small primer and large primer 7.62x39 brass? I started loading the 7.62x39 using the Rem stuff out of an expectation that it'd be more accurate. So far, my loads *have* been quite acceptably accurate but I've never actually tried the large primer brass to compare the two...

??

I've used both and while the large primers aren't exactly inaccurate they do yeild erratic pressure signs. The same loads using small primers are just a bit more accurate and don't have the erratic pressure signs. But I'm talking .75" groups VS .5" not exactly a large margin.

I've used large pistol primers with good results as well, But they do tend to deform when used in near max loads.

I am also a fan of the Rem cases with the small primers. I found that the Rem 7 1/2 BR primers worked the best. I searched everywhere for a new supply of Rem brass and came up empty. Rem doesn't even list it on their web site anymore. I picked up about 200 NEW cases on Ebay.

I have found that the K P and Lapua brass, even with the large primers have produced some impressive loads. If I can't get the Rem anymore, these two will work just fine. As for the Win brass, I loaded it all up, fired it at the range and left it for dead.

I don't know this for fact but, I was told that the K P brass and Lapua are one in the same.

I just missed winning an auction on eBay for 400 cases - I bailed when the bidding exceeded $71 + shipping. That just seemed too rich for my blood, until I realized that my 'other' sources had completely dried up. Now I'm stuck... :banghead:

I just picked up 100 once fire from this guy on Ebay. They are in the best shape of any once fired brass I have seen in this caliber.
He has more if any of you are interested.

Just to revive these thoughts and add a new spin. I'm currently loading a 100batch of Lapua x39 with the CCI No. 34 military primers. These are slightly smaller than regular large rifle primers and are designed for the pockets of military brass. I don't know how they'll perform but I'll report back.

Cosmoline, I don't quite understand. Granted, I've not reloaded 7.62x39, but in all of the other calibers I've reloaded the military brass utilized standard primers when the mil crimp was removed. Have you measured the diameter of the CCI mil-spec primers and confirmed that they're smaller in diameter?

Not in diameter, in depth. I just confirmed with my calipers that the military primers are a bit more shallow than the standard large rifle primers. If you've ever had the experience of trying to cram regular primers in, for example, Winchester 7.62x54R, you'll know what a blessing this is.
