What's a good flashlight to put on a Springfield XDs (single stack model) ? When I look at it I can't help but think a flashlight would look nice on there.
A good laser would be more practical. Of course the problem with lasers is most people sacrifice their marksmanship because it's instinctive to rely on where the laser is pointing, and not the sights.
A flashlight has it's problems too, because if you're relying on that flashlight, your gun is pointing right where the light shines. Not to mention, having a flashlight reveals you immediately to someone hiding in the dark. They see you, you still can't see them. I know of one case where a person with a flashlight was shot while looking for the perpetrator.
But that aside, say I do decide on a flashlight, what are some good ones?

I have a StreamLight TLR-3 that usually stays on my M&P full-size, but I have mounted on my M&P Compact and my XD-S, and it fits well. It has held up to range use, haven't abused it too bad, so can't tell exactly what the failure point is. The biggest thing to look for, is holster availability with your chosen combo. Like I said, I got it for my M&P FS, whereas most holster manufacturers assume that you would buy a TLR-1 for that role, instead.

Forget the light. You are not a backed up LEO. You are i\own you own and cover and concealment as as important to you a s they would be to the perp. Learn to use a handheld flashlight the proper wrist I’ve method and only turn on the Leigh when you have the shot. Do not go looking for the perp in cathedral dark with the light on. It just provides a point of aim.

the laser wIll have two advantages. 1) in dim light when sights are more difficult to see, and 2) when you do not have to to aim. Remember that if you cannot see the perp he can probably not see you. When you have trouble aiming the perp may not. You wan to put fast hits on the target in a gunfight. That will slow down you opponent even if it does not incapacitate him. That give you an advantage no flashlight can give.
