H&K P7.

I shot one twenty years ago and remember telling myself some day I had to have one, and that day is today, hoorah!

Fortunately, this shop has a small attached range so I got a chance to squeeze off a few after work.

If anything, Im more impressed now than back then- the benefit of years of experience with nearly everything that goes bang has taught me to appreciate a good trigger and low bore axis.
There is just a smidge of creep before the break, and the squeeze lever does move a tiny bit during the takeup, but overall this is by far the best production centerfire pistol trigger Ive ever shot.

The P7 certainly didnt disappoint in the accuracy department-

Granted, it was only 8 yards, but this is 24 shots :D. No fancy ammo either, just some 115gr Federal brass and aluminum cased range fodder. Boy, the fluted chamber did an interesting number on the aluminum cases!

As expected, I experienced no functional problems.

Not crazy about the finger-rest Nills, would rather have the thinner ones, but they sure are lookers! I may swap the factory plastic panels back on for the next range trip, though.

This is an early model without the heat shield in the trigger guard. It was just starting to heat up pretty good by the end of the third magazine, but nothinig I couldnt stand, certainly.

Not sure if it left the factory with these Trijiicons, but they still have a bit of glow left to them with the lights off.

So, there it is, gun bucket list complete- check.:)

I love both of mine; did yours come with the Nils?
BTW, those flutes are to allow extraction in the event the extractor fails. Also, you WILL want to buy the piston scraper if it didn't come in the box. I got the brush and takedown tool but no scraper.......

Got the brush, extra grips, owners manual, 3 magazines, and TWO scrapers, lol!

Ya, the Niils were on it when I bought it. I may yet pick up the thin Niils at some point.

I guess this was a Lower Saxony Police trade-in. The name of the officer that it was originally issued to is on the box, and the box is numbered to the gun. Its in amazing condition for a 38 year old cop gun!

Absolutely beautiful!!!

Congratulations.

HK P7:): Very, Very cool gun, and so unique. Never had the chance to try one.

Are your drinks "shaken-but not stirred"? I'm not familiar with the rest except for the Luger, which a very astute milsurp friend owned (he knows which are 'correct', and values etc). So pleasant to shoot.

Well, I worked at a bar for years- as a result I dont drink anymore, haha. But Martinis werent my poisen anyway, I was a Southern Comfort man.:)

Incidentally, Ive had a couple of Walther PP/PPKs as well and, although beautifully made and finished, I would never trust my life to one.

Lugers are pretty great. Its amazing that they work so well for being one of the very earliest auto pistol designs. Also, like the P7, very few attempts were made to copy its method of operation, despite its success- too expensive.

Sweet! I had one years ago and while it wasn't quite my "cup of tea ", so to speak, I did enjoy having the opportunity to find out for myself and give it a try. Looks like your's shoots as great as it looks, especially with those Nill grips! Enjoy my friend!

I have one with the plastic box; had to buy the scarper; have a second one in a cardboard box with a 4 digit serial number and that "plum" slide. Both are awesome to shoot

Yup, shoot it...that's what they were meant for. They were designed as a LE pistol. I shoot both my PSP and M8 in IDPA competition

I love the Nills grips, but that thumbrest is pretty prominent for a combat gun. Be careful when you remove them as the wood that slides under the frame is very thin.

An especially interesting pistol as I've never seen an ex-LE P7 with the 2nd generation mag release. All the ones I've come across have the narrower release

Hmm, until you mentioned it, I didnt realize there were two versions of the heel-release. Of course, I knew the P7M8 had it moved up by the trigger guard.

WV Sig has a Saxony trade-in from '85 which has the same release as mine. Maybe that was a feature of their contract?

This was the original and most common magazine release on the PSP

P7butt.jpg

The one on your P7 was developed later (reputedly because Americans complained about catching the original on things) and entailed changing the frame. Aesthetically I prefer the magazine release on your gun for the smoother profile, however the original allows faster magazine drops as you can activate it from the side as opposed to having to align your thumb with the cutout of the grip panels
