Is there a gun you carry as a backup to your backup gun? One that you consider yourself 'unarmed' if that's all you have?

I'm looking at either a .32 Beretta Tomcat or a 5-shot S&W .38 J-frame.

While my dress only prohibits me from wearing on the belt several times a year, it would also be nice to have an 'always' gun that serves as a backup backup gun.

So, what do you have as your last ditch back up gun?

Last ditch backup gun... I would say a 22LR deringer. Or a 22LR pepperbox that shoots all its rounds in one pull of the trigger.

Backup to a backup, I would not want to carry yet another magazine for it.

Skunk. A j frame or tomcat a back up-back up! Holy cow I must be undergunned my j frames are my main carry. Sometimes [very rarely] I'll carry my tomcat as a backup. My tomcat is extremely accurate. Small groups out to 10-15 yards easy. I locked up the sigs and glocks and been toting the j's for a year now. My back up-back-up would be a naa mini 22 on a necklace. Now thats my kind of jewelery. I might pick one up at the next gunshow. Rich

5 shots of .357 or .38 and you consider yourself un-armed. Wow I want you to protect me because you must be packing some heat.

I would thing the Little Berratas or .22 mag NAAs would work well. Doesn't NAA make a belt buckle gun. That would be interesting.

Maybe a little two shot .45 derringer or something. The only time you would want to fire it is when you absolutely needed to and chances are you would be at contact distance.

When I'm not carryin I carry a NAA 22mag. or Hi Standard 22 lr. Derringer or less often a Sterling 302 in 22 lr.. When I'm carryin its usually a Rossi 68S (j frame size) or a BHP. When I am carrying full size I dont worry about a back up, 5 rounds with another 5 in a speed loader or 13 in the HP should be more than enough to cover me while gettin my butt out of dodge. I aint hangin around for a fire fight.

There's not much out there appreciably smaller than the P32 I carry as backup. Heck, Probably 25% of the time, I carry just the P32. I suppose if I really wanted a bacup to my P32 that was the backup to my 1911, I'd just get another P32 and stash it somewhere else.

Maybe 1911 IWB, P32 front strong side pocket, other P32 rear weak side pocket?

Or I guess you could go an all-Kahr route. Maybe a K9 IWB, P9 Covert in an ankle holster and the PM9 in a pocket holster. You could even use all the same mags!

I consider my Beretta Jetfire my "false sense of security." Does that count as feeling unarmed? :scrutiny:

Seriously, I got my Jetfire last year because I was in market for a very small BUG and was reading threads on Tomcat frames cracking. As I understand it, Beretta has corrected the issue and the Tomcats are fine.

Get the Tomcat in titanium....would go purrfect w/ Nina!

I don't understand why that the farther you get from your primary gun (backup, and then backup to the backup) that for some reasion you must drop size and caliber, eventually moving down to some of the least lethal options. You sort of got to figure that if you haven't handled the problem with your full-sized gun, dropping size and caliber to the backup is not going to afford you that same potential success rate as your full-sized and larger caliber carry. The same with the backup to the backup.

If there is a situation where I need multiple BUGs, then I don't want to be shooting some tiny dinky cap gun. The move seems to be in the wrong direction.

"I tried to stop the intruder with my 1911 .45 acp. It was not effective enough. When that didn't work, I opted to try something less effective. When that didn't work, I used another gun that was even more less effective as the previous one. By the time I ran out of BUGs, I decided the best way to handle the situation was to sit as sitting still is less effective than that 2nd Bug, so it has got to be what I need!"

I dont carry a backup, dont see the need as I prefer to bug out. When I carry a pip squeak ( I wont call them ineffective as I had an uncle take a 22 long in the head during a robbery and he never regained consciousness, it was pretty effective) its only because I wish to carry really light. I really dont believe other than a Keltec P32 or a NAA mini that the current crop of pocket pistols is much smaller than say a Glock or Taurus PT111. I guess people look at them like life boats, you know when the big ship gets in trouble everyone gets in a little boat, go figger.

LOL

Skunk, come on man... a Titanium Snubbie? That would be just the ticket... unless you want to have a Sc fetish as well...

When I worked in a a blue suit -- I used to keep a NAA 22 next to my wallet tucked under and to one side -- as an "onion field" gun--

I too used to carry a NAA 22lr as an "onion field" gun.

Now, with school main CCW is 9mm
Prefer 45ACP

When I 'assist' or "special circumstances" my usual CCW is/or has been 45ACP X2 or 45ACP and a 9mm, or 9mmX2

been awhile since I carried a j or k frame. As a rule my smallest carry is 9mm (38spl).

Wondernine:
Yes

In fact Sat. more than likely will give a demo to some Students. I will use 2 1911 style or Keltec P-11. Only my gunsmith and I know about this demo and the BUG. The other instructors have not and will not be told.

Why P-11?
Some guards use them, they are ambi, DAO, fills a niche for some of the students.

Our drill will show what may happen If I'm shot, or my gun is shot.
Last time "OMG what now?"...weak hand BUG and the poppers, went down-with a P-11:D

If your BUG is the same caliber as your main gun, you can use your extra rounds in either one, if one of them decides to take a crap.

No one else seems to ever ponder this point.

If .357 is my main carry, my BUG is .357.

If 9mm is my main carry, my BUG is 9mm.

ect....

Tomcats

My experience with Tomcats -- as well as two others -- is that they jam if not VERY recently lubed--
Like every day!--

\They won't work dry--and CLP//G96//wd40// won't keep 'em lubed for more than a day--:(

Starting to wonder about Skunk...

Life's gotta suck when you're living in Condition Orange everyday, worrying about the backup to your backup gun. Who'd you piss off, the California Banjo Mafia?

NAA

I wear my mini always; I don't care what other 'main' gun.

They all good if you good.

Beretta 21A in .22LR

Skunk,

I have a Beretta 21A. Very reliable, shoots everything I've every put in it. Milt Sparks pocket holster and you've got a bug for your bug  . Also very good for use with clothing that just won't allow you to conceal anything else.

Jeff

In bulky coat season, my Jetfire is my third (or sometimes even fourth) gun, depending on how much stuff has been accumulating in my pockets.

In the summertime, it's usually my second. (Of course, this summer I've promised myself I'm going to get more serious about IWB carry, so it may continue as a third, if I find the right overgarment...)
