I just finished reading "The Last of the Mohicans" (absolutely amazing novel. The movie is awful as an adaptation of the novel but a rich and fun movie if taken separately from the book, in my opinion).

Anyways, I am wondering what type of rifle Natty Bumppo would have been carrying (not in the movie but in the mid-1750's when the novel takes place). I realize that Natty Bumppo was fictional but curious as to which rifle type his "flint long rifle" would be? There seem to be so many different types to me: Not only Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee long rifles but also Berks county, Lehigh valley, Dauphin valley, Virginia, York county, Lancaster, Allentown, etc.

If one wanted to have a true 1750's period flint long rifle, which of the above types would match up?

Thanks.

The French & Indian War period long rifle was a little heavier (thicker) than the Revolutionary War guns. The long rifle was evolving from the German Jaeger and continued to evolve into the percussion era. About the closest gun out there is the Christian Marshall walking gun kit as sold by Jim Chambers.

imdb says the book has served as the inspiration for 12 versions. the 1920 silent version evidently was a landmark in cinema.

that being said, the daniel day-lewis version has a huge website with lots of links.
